CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) The Wyoming school district where U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos suggested that teachers might need to be armed to protect children from grizzly bears voted Tuesday on doing just that, though concerns about school shootings worry parents more than the possibility of big bruins on the prowl.
The 4-2 vote by the Park County School District No. 6 board in the town of Cody near Yellowstone National Park came after more than six months of discussion and debate. Under the proposed policy...

The general statement about parents are concerned. Are these the parents in Cody or just parents nationwide? I live close to Yellowstone. We in this area by and large are gun owners and arent afraid of them. The weapon folks carry for defense is not a weapon to match up against a grizzly. The weapons that are reliable for a bear encounter are not suitable for CCW. In grizzly country you carry as big a hand gun as you are comfortable with. Its not a ccw candidate. CCW is for two legged animals.

Im not in Cody
But when was last Grizzly attack on a human in Park county WY?
Googling furiously....
I believe three statewide last year.
Two in Park county and one in Jackson area
Thus makes good sense
I don’t know but 1) I’m not sure DeVos is an expert on firearms; and 2) it probably was a quick quip in a speech. Perhaps something along the lines of “I think it reasonable to arm teachers from someone intent on mass murder. Heck, in Wyoming they probably already are against Grizzlies.”
The main point is of course - that the town of Cody becomes even a BETTER town. There is a HUGE firearm museum there (NRA supported?) and a rodeo that iirc runs every night in the summer for the tourists.
Yep - Nightly beginning June 1. Two hour show with REAL events. Plus the clowns. And letting the audience kids loose to try to catch a greased pig. (Well, at least they did 18 years ago.) $20 for an adult, $10 children.
Bear issues generally happen with back country hikers or hunters with a deer or elk or moose down. No less lethal than the in town version just more frequent. The Yellowstone area is bear country. Never heard of a grizzly in school. Leaving home to go the bus or getting off and walking home is worry time.

I was thinking along those lines too. Hopefully they don’t shoot a disproportionate number of bears versus white students, or they have the feds breathing down their backs and FORCING them to ‘mainstream’ the bears with the white students, rather than ‘stigmatize’ them by shooting them. And if that disrupts the learning process (and/or the autonomic systems) of the children, so be it.
In grizzly territory a handgun is only slightly better than nothing. MAYBE, if you get a lot of rounds into the beast, will you drop the BP enough to get it down, or get a couple of shots into the brain. MAYBE
Big game requires big guns, as a rule. Of the guns I actually own, I’d prefer my plain old shotgun with magnum slugs to deal with a charging grizzly. When they get their dander up, you basically have to tear their hearts or brains apart to get them down, so I’ve heard.
Handguns are very effective against bear attacks don’t believe the anti firearm anti hunting drivel.

Not in Cody, Wyoming. Ever been there?
I have. It is a charming town with good solid people with good solid common sense. Population is just under 10,000.
Trump carried the country by 74% to 18% to Hitlery. I'm not sure how they could find even 18% morons in such a town.
Even places like Cody have imbeciles and an influx of Californians and the like. I spoke with a friend from Kalispel, MT who complained to me that you can't even, quote, "Drive down the street these days without running over a hippy."
Not a problem, you just need an aftermarket heavy duty bumper.
And how many school teachers have the cool and the savvy to take down a Grizzly with a handgun?
It can be done, but it’s not for the novice.
Try carrying it in a concealed way. Got the cookies. Come out and try your luck without a back up shooter. They are going to have a hunt this year good luck.
