Under Xi's rule China has increasingly tightened its grip on the internet, concerned about losing influence and control over a younger generation who are driving a diverse and vibrant online culture from livestreaming to blogs.
"Without web security there's no national security, there's no economic and social stability, and it's difficult to ensure the interests of the broader masses," Xinhua cited Xi as saying.
"We cannot let the internet become a platform for disseminating harmful information and stirring up trouble with rumours," he added in comments made at a cyber security conference in Beijing, Xinhua said.
Chinese regulators have been driving a sweeping crackdown on media content, which has been gaining force since last year, spreading a chill among content makers and distributors.
China is also looking to take a leading role globally in internet regulation and technology more broadly, which has come into sharp focus amid a trade standoff with the United States and an arms race over technology.

China’s government fears truth. It is that simple. The real hell of it is, they can not put the electronic genie back in the bottle.
Yes, they can control the internet based on fiber optic cables. It must go through their hubs and routers and can be censored today. The internet is now in its infancy via satellite to recipient. China is losing control of internal information to its citizens. Their lose of control will be total in just a few short years. It will soon be satellite to consumer and there is not one damn thing to stop it.
And who controls the satellites? The masses? The elected government? The deep state?
Im sure leftists in western countries agree. Only those with right-think are allowed to speak, be heard, and read.
"We cannot let the internet become a platform for disseminating harmful information and stirring up trouble with rumours" or the truth.
Well sort of. The government can play whackamole on stealth VPN or Tor proxies. But the government will always lose unless they do one of two things: completely disconnect the internet (while creating a fake AOL-like internet) or execute people who use proxies. Even with either or both of those strategies there will still be people who get through, and if they disconnect the internet they will lose a lot of commerce.
For-profit companies. Those companies will make money from subscribers who want to bypass the firewall. The will also take money from China or other deep state organizations to turn over data to allow spying. The Chinese will use that data to execute people they don't like.
If they are controlling the Internet then the Chinese government is guilty of being a poor Internet citizen. Most of the hacking and spam comes out of China.
