Toronto police officer draws praise for refusing to shoot van suspect

A Toronto police officer who refused to shoot the man suspected of plowing a van into crowds of pedestrians on Monday, killing 10 people, was praised for restraint in the face of a suspect who claimed to have a gun.

Video footage showed the police officer staring down the suspect at gunpoint in the middle of a street, while the man pointed what appeared to be a gun and shouted "Kill me." The video showed the suspect repeatedly pulling an object from his side and aiming at police.

The arrest was praised as a welcome example of police restraint in the midst of chaos, coming just minutes after a white rental van plowed into a lunchtime crowd in north Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 15.

As the suspect shouted "Kill me," the officer replied, "No, get down." When the suspect said, "I have a gun in my pocket," the officer responded: "I don't care. Get down."

"It's quite apparent that the suspect was trying to be executed. He was really looking for 'suicide-by-cop,'" Gary Clement, retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police superintendent with 34 years experience of policing.

The Toronto Police Service declined to name the officer involved in the stand-off, but Clement said he appeared to be a "very seasoned and mature officer."

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said, "They are taught to use as little force as possible in any given situation," he said.

The non-violent end to the standoff won plaudits on social media.

"Wow, at how these Canadian cops brought in this suspected killer," said Twitter user Stuart A. Thompson.

Police in the United States have been criticized for being too quick to pull the trigger after a series of high-profile police shootings and deaths of suspects during arrest.

Sure, why didn’t he hand his weapon over to the suspect and say he was sorry for pointing it at him while at it?

It is the ultimate agenda of the left

The poice officer did not fire because he knew his life was not in danger, and he wanted to obtaion further evidence on any possible conspiracy.

____________

why bother? The conspiracy is worldwide and it is about terrorism. We all already know that.

And not because they choose to, but because the recitivist crimes escalated for want of prevention/aversion.

Good observation.

The lefties have their agendas.

Call it what you will but is there any doubt that in almost all U.S. cities the suspect would be dead and the shooting ruled justified? In Canada use of deadly force by the police seems to be the last option and not the first.

So police went back to being the executioners.

For just about any crime under the sun.

Does Canada have the fashionable thug-can-kill-a-cop program?

Isn't the ultimate duty of the police to arrest suspects and bring them in for trial? I wasn't aware that was a leftist agenda.

35 years ago I returned home to hear a noise in my bedroom. After retrieving a 12 gauge pump, I started to investigate and met a person coming out of the back of my house with a firearm in his hand. I stupidly yelled for him to drop it, so he shot me in the abdomen. I returned fire, called for help, went to the front yard where I collapsed.

10 days later I was discharged from the hospital after surgery and able to return to work and start paying medical bills and cleanup charges for damage on my house.

lesson learned was shoot first. Avoid hospital stay and cost. Live to tell the story. No one is fast enough to beat a perp with a firearm already in his hand.

Innocence only by reason of insanity if at all.

And when such killers are kill on scene (by their own hand or someone else) there will never be a trial, therefore no conviction and the wuss media still only refers to them as suspects. You cannot libel the dead.

I doubt his actions meet the insanity standards. But the media has always had to refer to perpetrators as "suspects" or "alleged" to protect themselves from libel lawsuits.

I’ll bet the “voices” he was hearing was something along the lines of “slay the infidel wherever you find him....”

And the suspect is alive so we can find that out.

Political correctness is destroying all sanity that is left in this corrupt world. Stupidity runs rampant. Idiots rule the day. Nutcases are elected to high offices. Fools rule the roost. Murdering thugs, from a made up, fake religion called Izzlam, which was written by a bunch of goat and camel herders. Who stole their wording for their fake book, from the ONLY true religious book ever written by the one TRUE and REAL GOD of Heaven and Earth. This fake book was to make a sick nutcase named Mooooo-ham-hox, into a so called prophet for this made up fake god, a moon god named Al-something the other. This is where this stinking, idiot, political correctness led world is taking this world. Mankind is finished. The ONLY hope we have is for our LORD and SAVIOR, Yeshua, to come back and receive to Himself, His bride, the Church. I pray He returns quickly. He promised His return quickly and I pray it is very very very soon. Without Him, what little is left of this stinking world has no chance. Come quickly LORD JESUS!!! Maranatha!!! IF you don’t know Him, YOU are running out of time.
