IIRC, he had this macho thing going with the press and law enforcement. His MO at the beginning was to rape and terrorize women who were home alone. Then the press implied that he very careful in targeting his victims because he was fearful of encountering a male. From that point he began targeting couples.
And he stopped the whole thing when he found out about dna. He knew all along that this day would come.

As disgusting as sex with a corpse is, I can’t believe some (few) men achieve sexual satisfaction while their partner is screaming or cowering in abject terror. I will never be able to understand that.

Probably DNA technology. If he had been arrested committing a crime then, DNA would go in the database and a match could be made. It was too risky. It was to his benefit to walk the straight and narrow. Just my opinion (as an ID Addict).

I watched a 3 hour show about the Golden State Killer on the ID channel this afternoon. Some of these crimes did occur while he was a policeman.
He was born in 1946 so maybe as he got older he decided to cut back and finally quit. As stated DNA got him and only within the last week or so did his name come up. They had to surveille him to get his DNA and not alert him. That will be interesting to see how his name became known to the police.
