Banking heiress Kate Rothschild's home raided for £500k in jewels as her children slept upstairs
Evening Standard UK ^ | 26 April 2018 | Justin davenport

Raiders broke into the home of banking heiress Kate Rothschild escaping with up to £500,000 worth of jewels and valuables as her children slept upstairs.

The burglars scaled a rear wall to enter her bedroom at her new home in Barnes, fleeing with a large jewellery box containing all her valuables, including an antique diamond dragonfly brooch and wedding and engagement rings.

Ms Rothschild, 35, pictured, returned home with her boyfriend, entrepreneur Paul Forkan, after a night out and only realised something was wrong when she could not get into her bedroom. Mr Forkan climbed through an open bedroom window and found the room had been locked by the intruders from the inside. There was little sign of a break-in but a search revealed a pink jewellery box gone.

The Thomas Goode box is said by friends to have contained “everything precious” to Ms Rothschild, including wedding and engagement rings from her former marriage to financier and environmentalist Ben Goldsmith.

...

Mr Goldsmith, 37 — younger brother of Tory MP Zac and son of billionaire Sir James — told the Standard: “They took every single thing of value Kate has, her wedding ring, engagement ring, everything I gave her during our marriage, special things from when she was a teenager, things from her father and her grandmother.

She kept jewelry of that value at home, and not locked in a safe?

And they had no security alarm systems on the windows?

All that money, and no security guard?

Maybe they are that stupid. OTOH, maybe there is something wrong with this picture?

(Recall the plot of “Beau Geste”?)

No safe, no alarms, no cameras? I guess they couldn’t afford it.

“Insurance scam?”

The Rothschilds apparently have been short of money; they sold an immense piece of property in Austria lately (the size of Manhattan).

Not saying it was for the insurance, but... Colombo might
start to ask “one last question...” based on the apparent ease with which the robbery was made.

“Hot” burglaries like this are rather rare in the US. My, my, could it be because the perps run the risk of being fatally shot every time they try it? An how does Ms Rothchild feel about the 2d Amendment?

Well at the very least I would think an alarm system would have been in place. I’ll bet she invests in one now.

Maybe - they just ‘happened’ to forget to activate the alarm system before a night out on the town.

Cameras broke again? Drats!

Fortunately they have Lloyds of London on speed dial...

Agreed.

Almost $700k in jewelry...AT HOME...NOT in a safe???

She inherited almost $25 mill, when her dad passed.
Plus whatever she got when she was divorced her husband.

$2K for a 1000 pound safe would have been cheap insurance.

Agreed, it sounds absurd for somebody at that level of wealth not having a security system, or better yet a guard on duty, especially with her children in the house. The emergence of bitcoin creates the ability to pay kidnap ransom, with little risk to the kidnappers.

She’s a Rothchild and can’t afford a vault in her house? Who leaves $500k laying around the bedroom?
