Keep in mind states like Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire(the last one over the 50% tipping point) were conservative states.

When I move to NH in 1985, it was a solidly conservative state surrounded by liberal states. Almost everyone I grew up with left western NY in the 1980’s. Now, they are leaving NY, Cal, CT, NJ and IL. Idaho’s real estate is booming because of people leaving California and Washington.

“Idaho’s real estate is booming because of people leaving California and Washington.”

? Washington has no state income tax to escape, but Idaho DOES have an income tax. Puget Sound, however, the liberal part of WA, does have some fairly onerous transit and vehicle taxes. They’d just be trading one tax for another.
