Neat place to visit. There are special tours. Along with shirts and hats, sealed bottles of local whiskey can be purchased in the gift shop.

Looking forward to Derby Day. A week from tomorrow.
I have to get some spearmint.
I don’t know if they still do it, but they used to have a race between a Cincinnati-based riverboat (the Delta Queen and its successor) and the Belle of Louisville along the river from Cincinnati to Louisville the day before Derby Day. if it’s possible, I’d like to go and be on one of the riverboats — then go to Churchill Downs for the Derby.
I’ve been to the Belmont. The other two are on my bucket list.
Where’s California Chrome and (my favorite) American Pharoh?

In the breeding shed. The Derby is restricted to three year-olds.
Thanks.
I followed horse-racing very closely long ago. But they stopped carrying stakes racing on the usual channels & I gradually lost interest. Hope they all make it home safe & sound.
Run the horses at the sametime as the greyhounds. That would be a race.
It’s much more fun to go to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks which is held the day before the Derby. The Oaks is basically the Derby for fillies.
Too many horses running. 11 in 1978, 10 in 79, 13 in 80 - before folks got greedy.
12 - 15 would be nice. With 27, they need to break it into two heats.
I knew someone who went there. They were in the crowd in the infield area. It was hotter than normal that year, and between the heat and the crowds, they told me they didn’t get a good view of the race. And they bet on the wrong horse. All in all, it was too crowded and hectic that they didn’t enjoy it.
Only if they don't go further than 3/8 of a mile. And don't forget that the horses all carry a man on their back. The dogs have a saddle cloth.

I’m pretty sure they do NOT have that race anymore.
A quick search says the Delta Queen is now stationed in Chattanooga!
Links to Stallion Register for both - beautiful pictures, links to farm websites that have more info, etc.

21 ran the year I was there. It was 1971.

I love to watch horses run.
Too much Gunsmoke in my youth?
I love the whole business of naming horses.
When I was a kid, there was a contest to name a foal. The sire was named after a cut of meat - it may have been ‘Porterhouse’; and the dam was named ‘Lily’-something.
My father said we should enter ‘Li’l Fillet’.
I can’t remember if we entered or not, but I thought my Daddy was pretty clever ;-)
