Former ambassador to Vietnam: Trump wanted me to send back refugees
San Jose Mercury ^ | April 6, 2018 | Tatiana Sanchez

Former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said he resigned from his post last year after the Trump administration asked him to pressure the Vietnamese government to receive more than 8,000 Vietnamese refugees marked in the U.S. for deportation.

The vast majority of the people targeted for deportation — sometimes for minor crimes — were war refugees who had established lives in the U.S. after fleeing the Vietnam War more than 40 years ago, Osius wrote in an essay this month for the American Foreign Service Association.

The article is total BS. The criminals need to be sent packing. We can work with Viet Nam vis a vis China. That $4 billion we promised to pull out? They reneged on their promise to leave the South alone. Trump can open it up again.

If they’ve been here 40 years but are not yet citizens, we can live without them.

Prior to 1975 the ethnic Chinese population was about 5.3% of the Vietnamese population. Between 1975 and 1980 it was reduced to about 2%, primarily through expulsion from Vietnam by the Vietnamese government.

“I’m guessing this asshat resigned right before they tossed his sorry a$$!!!:

You are exactly right. He was an Obama appointee to the position and he knew the new administration was going to require his resignation after Trump came into office. These were not “boat people” refugees but people who came well after the war after 1995 and committed crimes. Trump’s mistake was not cleaning garbage like this guy out of State the first day he came into office and allowed them to linger while trying to get his State hierarchy in place

They knew, before they arrived here, that they must not commit crimes or they would be deported.

The Lei family was unavailable for comment due to being murdered by a refugee that Vietnam refused to take back.

They are not illegal.

Yes, they are. Even this mess of an article admits that the people arrested were in this country illegally.

It comes months after Vietnamese activists across the country, including many in the Bay Area, raised concerns that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was rounding up undocumented immigrants from Vietnam in unprecedented numbers that left communities shocked and fearful.

And criminal aliens should be rounded up and returned to sender.

Yes, and they went everywhere across Asia, from Sigapore, to Thailand, to Hong Kong, to Malaysia, to Taiwan and elsewhere where there were large ethnic Chinese populations in Asia, and yes “many” became part of the refugees that made it to the U.S., but even then it did not comprise “most” of the refugees. The vast majority were ethic Vietnamese who (1) had sided with the U.S., (2) had been part of the South Vietnamese government or military forces, (3) politically active and opposed to the Communists, and (4) just did not want to live under the Communists.

Again, “many” does not comprise “most”.
