“They aren’t refugees after all but illegal aliens who committed crimes while residing in our country. “
They are not illegal. They were admitted here as refugees after the Vietnam war ended and given legal refugee status here. Most arrived as “boat people” (Vietnamese who ESCAPED from Vietnam by boat) and many came from Vietnamese refugee camps in Thailand.
If (who has checked out the “8,000” claim) they could have been deported, they would have to have been legal residents (legal “Green Card” holders) who had not yet obtained citizenship, and who - at some time in the past - had broken some law, committing a felony.
Frankly, given why they - the Vietnamese - came to this country (many of who sided with the U.S. in the war), and with the millions of ILLEGALS in the country, I think it is poor use of ICE and other federal resources to go after such folks.
In fact, given the number of ILLEGALS in the country and prioritizing ICE and other resources they, ILLEGALS, should be 99.999999% of the priority.
I worry that DHS and ICE are boosting “deportation” numbers to impress a lot of non-thinking people - pulling in thousands of green card holders, while the numbers of ILLEGALS are not changing greatly. Makes news that some cheer but is not getting the most important job done - ILLEGALS.
Yes, they are. Even this mess of an article admits that the people arrested were in this country illegally.
It comes months after Vietnamese activists across the country, including many in the Bay Area, raised concerns that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was rounding up undocumented immigrants from Vietnam in unprecedented numbers that left communities shocked and fearful.
And criminal aliens should be rounded up and returned to sender.
