31 bullets: A Chicago Sun-Times campaign to end gun violence (barf alert)
Chicago S-T ^ | 30 apr 2018

--(snip) The filmmakers then follow the seven teachers on a visit to a gun range. One teacher is a military combat veteran, while several others have never touched a gun in their lives.

They shoot this gun and that gun, carefully supervised by a pro, trying to hit a target shaped like a person. They cry out when the gun recoils and flinch when an empty shell ejects.

Is this an appropriate classroom role for a teacher? (snip)

“...31 bullets for every man, woman and child in the United States...”

- not nearly enough.

So it’s not two or three generations worth of corrupt, criminal Democrats running that city along the cultures of drug abuse, illiteracy, welfare mothers, and fatherless kids combined with entertainment industry violence. No, it is still (and always has been) the gun.

My very first time shooting a gun was in Boy Scouts. It was a .22 rifle shoot at targets ~50m away. There was almost no recoil, and the brass ejected so fast I didn’t know what it was.

Fast forward to when I bought my first handgun, and I remember popping off a few rounds without ear protection to understand what to expect of the report if ever firing in a real-life situation. It was loud and left my ears ringing, and I even flinched. Subsequent rounds elicited less of a reaction, and I grew to understand the functionality including how not to pull the trigger.

First-time shooters are going to be squeamish and understandably a little gun shy (pun intended). To gauge a person’s capabilities and reactions under pressure based on their first time shooting is shortsighted and naive.

Funny, my first time firing a handgun, my instructor had me fire a .40 from S&W. It recoiled, I said “whoah!” I guess that was my crying out. After 30 minutes and some additional instruction I was fine.

As an Senior Training Counselor for a nationally recognized organization (and an LE handgun instructor to boot), with 100s of students under my belt - from newbies, the most common reaction is “SH!T, this is FUN!” accompanied by an ear to ear grin.

And, to the a$$hole who wrote this, paper plates are the norm. Human shaped targets are a no-no for civilians.

Did anybody catch the individual that tied up, kidnapped, and spirited these teachers off to the gun range...and then made them pick up guns and shoot them?

In the initial training phase, human shaped targets are inappropriate. Paper plates, BTW, place the focus on the operation of the firearm, not hitting the bull’s eye.

In later (defensive tactics) training courses, they are fine. And in those courses, the focus is “stop the threat”, not (to quote Arlo Guthrie in Alice’s Restaurant) “I wanna kill; I wanna maim”.

“Human shaped targets are a no-no for civilians.”

Here in Illinois I was legally required to use a standard B-7 human shaped target to obtain my license to carry a concealed firearm. What planet do you live on?

OK. So human shaped targets are not a no-no for civilians. Good to know.

Sure, let's take half a dozen teachers to the range who have never touched a firearm before, have them shoot what looked like a .40 as their first exposure to a handgun, then show their reactions as proof that teachers shouldn't have guns.

How about instead getting a group of teachers that already have concealed carry licenses, and ask them if they would consider carrying in the classroom if they had additional specific training such as Ohio's FASTER program?

These idiots think that arming teachers means passing out Glocks to every new hire along with the keys to the staff break room. No, "arming teachers" really means ending the practice of disarming teachers when they walk through the schoolhouse doors.

Actually, I think in either NJ or MASS. its illegal to use human silhouette targets on the range. Plus hollow-points are illegal. Almost even thinking about a gun is illegal. I know, crazy.
