The company that's conquered the world of online retail is now taking on its hometown City Hall, with Amazon delivering an unprecedented public threat Wednesday against a proposal for a new tax on large employers in Seattle.

The retail giant has paused construction planning on a new downtown Seattle tower until the City Council votes on the tax to fund homelessness programs, a spokesman said.

Amazon also may sub-lease rather than occupy space in a skyscraper under construction downtown, said the spokesman, Drew Herdener

The tax seems otherworldly: “Unveiled after weeks of conversations, the legislation would create a tax of 26 cents per Seattle employee-hour on companies that gross at least $20 million per year in the city.”
In addition, accusations are flying of kickbacks to city council from homeless projects.

“homeless-industrial complex”

Maybe you do, but I suspect that you have NO IDEA just how CLASSIC that term is. Absolutely perfect!

major corruption in the city council where the 'homeless industrial complex' they've hired to 'solve' the problem is kicking back major $$$ to the council

Most specifically the self avowed socialist Kshama Sawant, who is also most annoying. Her hubby is on the take via a Clinton-like social justice foundation.

While I do agree that it is OUTSTANDING to see the Left eating itself, it is also very sad when we remember just how HORRIBLE it has to be for that to happen.

In the case of SF, they’re not looking at losing some HUGE convention dollars...so they are (finally) asking whether to shove their ‘homeless’ in the face of big-money people is really a good idea.

For the rest of us, it wouldn’t have taken the loss of ‘external revenue’ to make that point.

Kshama Sawant, a city council member who us crazier than a sh^t-house rat, got into a shouting match with the owner of Dick’s Drive-In (Seattle’s “In and Out” and beloved hamburger stands) over the head tax she is pushing.

I am hoping they threaten to leave Seattle. Now THAT will cause riots in the streets!

You would think that they would have plenty for “their fair share”, given that they paid approximately $0.00 in federal taxes...

If Dick’s leaves Seattle over the Head Tax, it will be a epoch event. For many of Seattle liberals, the pay a head tax to Dick’s if you understand the habits of pot smokers. Dick’s is the holy temple of Seattle’s hamburger drive-ins for the Seattle liberal needing to calm their after-midnight munchies. They will be having withdrawals like lab rats at the U of W. if Dick’s leaves. Already, Kent is becoming the first out-of-Seattle location for a ground-breaking Dick’s Drive-in.

What happens for Dick’s will be repeated with other companies. I imagine there will be a mass migration of people leaving Seattle if a Head Tax passes.

Seattle’s homeless used to be a quaint problem usually involving local tribal drunks and such. Now it is not only a shi hole, but actively trying to become the shi hole capital.

Libs also love higher prices, so Jeffy will just raise the price of his stuff to cover.
