Why Kim Jong-un’s promise of a nuclear-free North Korea should not be trusted
South China Morning Post ^ | 4 May 2018 | Deng Yuwen

Posted on 05/04/2018 6:31:47 AM PDT by AmericanInTokyo

Deng Yuwen says Kim has rightly calculated that he needed to make some concessions to ease international pressure on his regime, but he will never totally give up the nuclear programme that North Korea has invested so much in.

The historic summit between North and South Korean leaders ended as they signed the “Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula”. Denuclearisation on the peninsula is the top concern of the international community, but the issue is mentioned only in the fourth point of the third article in the declaration.

According to this third article, the two Koreas agree on the urgent historic task of ending the “current unnatural state of armistice” and pledge to build an enduring peace mechanism on the peninsula. As part of this larger goal, point No 4 says the two Koreas “confirmed the common goal of realising, through complete denuclearisation, a nuclear-free Korean peninsula”. In other words, the peace process could proceed even if denuclearisation efforts stall.

It was not out of negligence that the declaration was written this way. North Korea intends to make denuclearisation only a sub-item to consider when it comes to peace-building – a far cry from what the outside world expects.....

The Sorks would have no problem taking on the Norks. Would China intervene? Probably not. Too much going with the South. Time for us to pull out. Japan? They will have to ally with Taiwan, S. Korea, Viet Nam, and the P.I. Doable. It’s called the Greater Asia co-prosperity Sphere.

Because institutional historical context is missing in nearly all US domestic news sources disingenuously reporting this recent development in a must superficial manner. That’s why.

A great disservice to Americans and readership/viewership at-large.

I disagree. I believe Xi gave him his marching orders during the train trip. I believe President Trump convinced the Chinese strongman that he was serious about destroying the DPRK if they aimed a missile at the United States. That would cause fallout and a refugee crisis that China does not want.

This guy would be stupid to try something, and we would be stupid to trust him.

You set up a clear agreement that he disarms, and you make it stick. We agree not to bomb him.

Let the South unite with him.

Or he will because he realizes he can follow the examples of Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China and become fabulously wealthy by joining the rest of the world. All he has to do is stop fighting his grandfather and fathers 65 year old war.

I think the little fella did something really bad to his nuke program by accident, and if we want to observe all of it, it will involve the entire excavation of a collapsed, contaminated mountain and any nuke handling bases. He wants help before it kills everyone there. Or it could be a number of other things, like Trump being his hero...

After all, Dennis Rodman did gift Kim with a copy of "Art of the Deal" when he visited NK.

He wants the sanctions lifted.

He wants US troops out of South Korea.

He wants money, energy and food.

He wants to split the united opposition against him by driving wedges between DC, Tokyo, Seoul and use the foreign media to weaponize his strategy, and in tandem with coopting the moden day Asia Neville Chamberlain, leftist Pres. Moon Jae In.

He wants to continue to maintain power for him and his close relatives and confidants.

He wants to continue to keep his nukes, chems and bios.

He wants to keep his IRBM launch capability.

He wants to fool the Free World and out negotiate just as his father did.

Who is trusting Kim?

I’m puzzled who that might be?

The Never Trumpers?

I’m absolutely positive that the guy that matters, President Trump, doesn’t trust Kim.

Trust but verify. If there is no way to verify their destruction and that others are not being produced, no dice. Reagan did it with the Soviets, Trump can do it with the pot bellied dog eater.
