ROCKUMENTARY: 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

#32: SIMON & GARFUNKEL: “MRS. ROBINSON”

The first side of the “Bookends” album was a concept side meant to be played all in one sitting. Thanks to the Moody Blues, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, concept albums were hot in 1968. This is from the second side.

“The Graduate” was a sleeper, a film that racked up ticket sales and money while other films got the headlines. It ended up being one of the greatest financial successes in film history, made Dustin Hoffman a star and further burnished the reputation of director Mike Nichols. Some of the techniques Nichols pioneered in the film became standard procedure in movies and TV over the years.

The New Yorker wrote a long article about this movie explaining why it resonated with Baby Boomers. There was one classic bit of dialog where Ben’s father asks, “What did I send you to college for?” and Ben answers, “Got me, Dad.” That line produced applause from Boomer audiences. Another conclusion was that it gave a Boomer (Ben) the chance to punch out a member of the GI Generation, specifically Elaine’s father.

The scene in the church, filmed in the L.A. suburb of La Verne, where Ben arrives too late to stop the wedding but busts it up anyway, is a landmark in American cinema. “It’s too late!” Elaine’s mother screams at her. “Not for me it isn’t!” Elaine screams right back.

The last scene on the bus was directed by Mike Nichols with the instruction, “Don’t think about anything. Make your minds blank.”
