There were little old ladies who swooned over Liberace and middle American women who banked the box office appeal of Rock Hudson.

There’s no accounting for taste with Liberace but Rock Hudson, on screen, at least, projected a charming masculinity. If you don’t believe me, watch Giant or his very funny performances in his Doris Day movies. Gay actors, in his day, could not afford to project any kind of pansy image either on stage or off. That is the very definition of good acting - conforming to the role.

My mom really loved Rock Hudson. I'm usually good at spotting gay actors, but IMO Rock never projected gayness at all. I still enjoy watching him in his better movies. My wife says she always got a bit of a gay vibe from him, but I don't see it. Richard Chamberlain is a favorite of mine and my wife. There were always rumors about him, but he was great in his roles.

I still don't see what women saw in Liberace.
