Connecticut’s legislature has passed a bill that would give the state’s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote nationally.

The state Senate voted 21-14 on Saturday to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which includes 10 states and the District of Columbia. The state House passed the measure last week, 77 to 73.

The states can cast their votes any way they want. Unless a republican wins.

Odd - this sounds EXACTLY like Connecticut’s legislature is disenfranchising its own citizens.

Exactly.

Doesn’t anyone in Connecticut remember the Charter Oak?

When I tell people from certain states that my ANNUAL property taxes on 32 acres and a nice ten year old home are below $600.00, they think I live in some parallel dimension.

I need to remind them that it is not that I’m paying too little. Rather, it is that they are being robbed and have simply gotten used to it. The frog is boiled alive.

Make them prove that every Vote in every State is legitimate, then they can throw their hissy fit.

"It may, but this will pass constitutional muster. States can direct their electors to vote by any means. It will not get to SCOTUS, though, because they will not have enough electoral votes to trigger the compact."

I don't think that is correct. The Constitution gives the states the power to SELECT their electors in a manner of their own choosing, but that is not the same as the states mandating how the electors must VOTE.

So they’re saying if the stupid State voters don’t vote with the popular vote of other States then their vote is wiped out and given to those other States.

Seems unconstitutional to me.

There is no national popular vote. There are only 50 state votes. Just because the media decides to sum the state votes does not mean there is a national vote total. Too often the American public accepts the media premise.

Nebraska and Maine already do this.

In Nebraska, it is what kept the state Red, and from everyone who does not live in Omaha from seceding.

That would negate the voting for President by citizens of Connecticut altogether.

Another leftist tactic to circumvent the electoral college. It was set up that way for a reason. and this is one of them.

First...I think I've read that such an arrangement is unconstitutional without approval from Congress. Also, the states that have signed on so far are all reliably Rat states so....

"I’m pretty sure you’re right. The Constitution gives the states great leeway on how their electors are assigned."

The states have leeway in determining how their electors are SELECTED, but that does not mean they can tell the electors how to VOTE. I think they Supreme Court would view this law as a backhanded effort to effectively abolish the electoral college as a meaningful entity. If every state passed a law like this, EVERY presidential election would end up being a 100% electoral college landslide; that is NOT consistent with intent of the Constitution.
