Thousands of University of California workers start 3-day strike over pay

LOS ANGELES — Thousands of custodians, security guards, gardeners and other service workers at University of California campuses started a three-day strike Monday to address pay inequalities and demand higher wages.

Strikers gathered at sunrise on the 10 campuses throughout the state, wearing green T-shirts and carrying signs that call for “equality, fairness, respect.”

The strike was called last week by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents 25,000 service workers, after the union and the university could not agree on a new contract and mediation efforts failed.

Nurses and other medical workers will join the strike later this week, which is expected to disrupt thousands of surgeries and other appointments.

The service workers called for a sympathy strike by professional and technical employees, including medical assistants, nurses, radiology and other technicians. A union representing 14,000 nurses and another union that includes about 15,000 pharmacists, clinical social workers and physician assistants agreed to join the strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

3-day strike for over pay?

Unions - they’ll strike no matter what.

How much do they get? A thousand dollars a day?

(I’m not visiting the rest of the article at NBC.)

We’d all be better off if they stayed on strike forever.

Before any discussion of pay for UC employees, conduct a thorough, comprehensive financial audit of all UC campuses and employees. Where the money comes from, where it goes, to whom it goes, what it is used for. Publish the results in unambiguous, detailed form, and provide a forum for public inquiry and provide responses to questions. The results might be a bit scary.

BTW, union issues seem to appear before elections during GOP administrations, do they not?

Sorry fellow CA FReepers, but looking from the outside, California looks like a real basket case.

just the beginning. Unions don’t care how much debt a state has.

Typical of articles about a union strike, there is no mention of how much they earn currently. It does say ... at or above market rates. They are angry about contract workers, probably non-union and costing the taxpayers far less.

I guess they don’t believe college should be free for everybody. You mean the employees want to be paid? They must not care very much for the children.

Too bad it wasn’t the Professors.... it would have improved the High Education system in California exponentially.

Let the teaching staff take over their duties. It’s not like the faculty lounge is the only refuge for those socialists.

They should mop floors for BART.

I have to say this is one time I have sympathy for the striking "prols". The guy who mows the campus lawn does more honest work than any of the $300K /year "professors" teaching "transgender studies" or "chicano studies".

The guy who mows lawn actually does something useful.
