~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas is the oldest continuously operating military installation west of the Mississippi River. This historic post, noted for its campus setting, open green spaces and hometown character, is the home of the US Army’s Combined Arms Center (CAC).

CAC, as a major subordinate headquarters of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command, has often been referred to as the “ Intellectual Center of the Army”. It is, in many regards, “home base” for the majority of field grade officers across the Army.

Since its founding in 1827, it has significantly evolved and today, as part of Installation Management Command - West Region, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) by managing and maintaining the home of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center.

CAC has eleven major subordinate organizations that are staff extensions and provide expertise for the core functions. All are located at Fort Leavenworth:

Battle Command Knowledge System, U.S. Army Information Operations Proponent, Combat Studies Institute, Current Force Integration Directorate, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Combined Arms Center for Training (which includes the Battle Command Training Program and the National Simulations Center).

Fort Leavenworth is home to the Military Corrections Complex, consisting of the United States Disciplinary Barracks, the Department of Defense's only maximum security prison, and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility.

In addition, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports numerous tenant organizations that directly and indirectly relate to the functions of the CAC, including the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Foreign Military Studies Office.

Colonel Benjamin Grierson formed the 10th Cavalry on 21 September 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It, along with the 9th Cavalry, 24th and 25th Infantry, formed the first all-black regiments in the Regular United States Army. In western Kansas, the Kiowa encountered the soldiers of the 10th as valiant opponents and termed them the "Buffalo Soldiers."

On December 1, 1888, General Benjamin Grierson, upon relinquishing command of the Tenth Cavalry stated:

"Always in the vanguard of civilization and in contact with the most warlike and savage Indians of the Plains. The officers and men have cheerfully endured many hardships and privations, and in the midst of great dangers steadfastly maintained a most gallant and zealous devotion to duty, and they may well be proud of the record made, and rest assured that the hard work undergone in the accomplishment of such important and valuable service to their country, is well understood and appreciated, and that it cannot fail, sooner or later, to meet with due recognition and reward."

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks, Lauren for the road trip to our neighboring state of Kansas. Always enjoy the visits to our neighbors.

How's it going for everyone this morning?

Things are going pretty well in this neck o’ the woods. Enjoying the warm temps that finally decided to move in.

How are things in your neck o’ the woods? And how is Bo doing? Well, I hope.

Yes....it has been quite the day for all of us. 6:45p was the first departure and no one left their desk for lunch. Too much stuff to do. Oh well...we will get the checks out on time, right or wrong. LOL! Any wrong hours or rates of pay are on someone besides us. Managers will have to take more responsibility for problems. We have no time to check (I’m hating this) stuff that doesn’t look right.

Good evening, Idaho...has spring completely arrived? I thought it was here for good, but the higher elevations in town got snow last night. We got much needed rain.

Everything is going OK. We had a brief trip to the lake and that was about it.

We're awaiting for new automated meters to arrive sometime this week. The city is putting them in so they won't have to come by people's houses to read them.

It is warm out there. We're forecast to hit 89 today.

They have GOT to get on the stick and find someone to fill Cora’s position SOON. All the extra stuff they loaded y’all with before Cora even looked for something else and now three of you doing it all. Not gonna work for long.

Sad that so many of those babies are virtually “sacrificed” every year.

I just checked on what birds could be seen at this time. Milda and Raimis’s little family just gets cuter and the littlest one is getting good feedings.

I’d better go. I started watching volcano videos and time got away from me. See ya tomorrow night for another quiz! Tuesdays sure do seem to come around quickly. LOL! Nite!

As long as Bo is up to his walks at the lake, that sounds pretty good. :-)

Not sure how I feel about those automated meters. People here raised a ruckus about it when they announced those things would be installed but I don’t know what happened overall. I know we don’t have them on our house yet.

Whew! It’s going to be right toasty there today!
It’ll be here by the weekend as that’s the high they forecast for Saturday.
We’ve gone from winter to summer.

Yes, it is sad. Makes it tough to watch the nests for a few days after the eggs all hatch. But it’s part of nature whether we like it or not. It’s still a thrill to watch the survivors grow and eventually fledge.

Worried about Raimis right now. He hasn’t shown up at the nest yet. Milda didn’t count on it and has eaten and fed the babies well this morning and now the pantry is about bare.

Sleep well. Catch ya tomorrow for the quiz.

We have been, but now we’re headed into hot summer weather, at least for the next week.

How’s it going up there?
