China steps up quarantine checks on U.S. apple, log imports
BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinas main ports will step up quarantine checks on imports of apples and logs from the United States, and shipments found carrying disease or rot could be returned or destroyed, the Chinese customs agency said on Monday.
Reuters reported last week that the main Chinese ports of entry have ramped up checks on fresh fruit imports from the United States, which could delay shipments from U.S. growers already dealing with higher tariffs as China-U.S. trade ties sour.
Recently, pests were detected in apples and logs imported from the United States at the ports of Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Xiamen and others, the Chinese General Administration of Customs said in a statement posted on its website.
If apples or logs are suspected of carrying pests, samples will be sent to laboratories for inspections, and while the tests are under way goods will not be allowed to pass through customs.
Previously, customs officers in China had let shipments through while they conducted sample checks.
The measure was announced days after a U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin visited Beijing for two days of talks aimed at easing trade tensions between the worlds two biggest economies.

P!
In the construction world rumor has it lumber is getting scarce. Why do we need to export it at all? Also I’m not sure US produce rotting on a Chinese dock is a new thing.
You mean the same people that brought us chemicals in drywall, melamine in dog food, the emerald ash borer, and tracking devices in silicon chips is now inspecting our stuff? Give me a break.
The Chinese will play their corrupt little games ALWAYS. PAY THEM BACK ten times over.
What about a banana?
Bad move on China’s part.
They obviously don’t take Donald Trump seriously.
They will.
Some at FR do not take it kindly when this is brought up. I don't know why, but probably their meal ticket depends on it.
That sounds like some sort of personal problem. I don’t make the fact I just report them.
Don’t forget the Formosan Termite.
What about the invasive bugs and creatures here that all came from China? I’m falling with these damned stink bugs constantly.
I would nuke them for those alone.

You forgot two of my personal favorites stinkbugs and snakehead fish,
Yes I did.
Perhaps larger imported items, e.g. autos and other assembled items might want special scrutiny.
We shouldn't be exporting raw logs or apples.
We should be exporting lumber that has been dimension sawed, planed and kiln dried.
That way there would be no need for inspection as there would be no bugs and the jobs of processing it would be in the USA.
Ditto the apples.
Sell them applesauce and any other processed and sealed apple products.
I ABSOLUTELY HATE having to buy anything from china. I hate having tobuy on line and PU at store.
I want to see, feel, inspect, and read LEGIBLE instructions before I buy. Been screwed to damn many times.

Well that rules out COSTCO, SAMS, WALMART, BEST BUY, TARGET, AMAZON, and pretty much anywhere else. We allowed this to happen with our desire for more and more of the latest stuff at dirt cheap prices thanks to foreign slave labor. Only way out of this now will involve economic pain by tightening the family budget, doing without all those uneeded toys, and putting pressure on the Chinese to stop taking advantage of their own people and prepare to deal with President Trumps plan to do correct the trade imbalance. Remember, BUY AMERICAN, if you can find it!
That’s what I’ve said in the past. Probably up to 19 years ago. Most likely scoffed at at the time.
Great idea.
Yup!
