WASHINGTON The junior lieutenant in charge of navigating the USS Fitzgerald when it collided with a commercial vessel pleaded guilty Tuesday to dereliction of duty and acknowledged her role in the deaths of seven sailors last year.
Lt. j.g. Sarah Coppock cried during her court-martial at the Washington Navy Yard. She was sentenced to forfeit half of her pay for three months an additional month on top of the two she forfeited as her nonjudicial punishment. She also received a letter of reprimand.
Not a day goes by where I havent thought about what I could have done differently, she said. There is nothing I can do now but take responsibility.

No Discharge?
Two thoughts:
1. She had no business being the OOD to begin with, thanks to affirmative action, and
2. I will give her credit for taking responsibility and not blaming others. That is the one thing she did right.
yes once a month or so thats why she is still there
No excuse for what happened.
Damn you Instagram!
She isn’t a “junior lieutenant”, she’s a “Lieutenant Junior Grade”. And the speculation as to why the Navy was so reticent about identifying the OOD is now over.
Never having run afoul of the UCMJ I don't know much about it but I thought that once you were punished for an infraction under Article 15 you couldn't be prosecuted/punished in any other way.
There was the problem right there.
The navy is in such terrible shape because they are trying to integrate queers and women into a war machine. Won’t happen. Can’t happen. Never has and never will. The republicrat head of the armed services committee takes over a million dollars a year from defense contractors and screened employees, We are in huge trouble.
A ‘reprimand’
and a few month’s pay
PUKE
How many O-4s and how many O-5s were assigned to that ship? 10 or more total? (How many of them were on the bridge?) Yet, it is Navy procedure to have an O-2 OD. I was never in the Navy (but was in the Army) and although I am all for young officers being given responsibility, this sounds really stupid to me.
This young LTjg should write one hell of an “After Action Report” for the benefit of all -—— “Lessons Learned” is a great tool to prevent this kind of FU’s in the future.
This article is very confusing as it describes a court martial and also calls it non judicial punishment. It cannot be both. Poorly written to say the least.
Having only reached the lofty rank of SP5 I don't know much about officers but I've heard it said that when an officer receives a letter of reprimand his/her military career is over.
Political correctness costs lives
