“And someone tell me what is wrong with licensing all reporters anyway?”

Did someone hijack your FR account?

No one needs to be licensed to exercise their first amendment rights.

It is the elitist owners and journalists of the news media who would love to implement licensing in order to further dominate and control everything people see and hear.

The “press” is not a class of people. It is the generic term for a means to disseminate information.

That being said, the president is free to use his bully pulpit and his control of access to White House press briefings to separate the wheat from the chaff among the professional reporters and their respective news organizations.

Trump should continue calling out fake news. And Drudge should put down the crack pipe.

Yes, that headline then was totally dishonest. I thought he was threatening to take away their license to report news. He is just thinking of removing them from the White House?

Well, at the moment they seem to have a license to slander and libel which they use against Trump at every turn. I, for one, think they should pay some consequences for all their blatant, one-sided dishonesty.

Really? You believe a government license would mean reporters would lose their freedom of speech? I don’t see it that way.

No, but it would mean that they would lose their freedom of the press. The so called "Press" (i.e. corporate media) has no more inherent right to White House access than you or I have when we post on FR, or start a blog.

Do you think the government should be able to license us in order for us to be allowed to post on FR, or publish blogs, or post our videos on YouTube?

Because that's the outcome of what you're advocating.

They make people license weapons and do background checks and such so why not the 1st amendment too? /S

No reporter should need a license or anything to REPORT

Access to secure locations requires a process and background check that is, and right ought to be, revocable.

In the same way no license or anything should be required for arms.

“No, I’ve never heard of samizdat.”

Secret literature, passed from hand to hand in the old USSR. “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” was originally samizdat.

“And hasn’t truth (journalistic honesty and integrity) already disappeared from the public square?”

For years it was severely restricted, but the Internet has allowed more truth to circulate. Sometimes I think there are similarities between conservatives on the Internet and samizdat.

“We have to be licensed to enjoy our 2A right, but not our 1st?”

That’s the whole thing about the 1st—the government is not allowed to say who can speak and who can’t. The left takes malicious, cynical advantage of that, but I don’t see a way around it.

Besides, two wrongs don’t...well, you know.

Lobby for the legalization of dueling. Ever seen Scaramouche? (1950s version)

“More than a few smart people on the web have argued that if a licensed journalist is caught in a lie or distorts the truth to further a lie, then why not yank their license and deny them a job?”

Because the forces of evil would use it to yank the licenses of honest reporters for telling the truth.

Who is the licensing agency and what are the criterion? The real issue is that all of the major news agencies are owned by multinationals that have a distinctly anti MAGA agenda. The solution is in the works, net based news services proliferating like fleas. The cream will rise to the top and the people will be informed. Take heart in the knowledge that in spite of 90% bad press POTUS’ support is growing. That is certainly not because of the efforts of the MSM. The citizenry is going outside the MSM to learn about the world we live in.
