Rebel U.S. soldier punished for cutting chutes as Humvees drop from plane

A U.S. Army soldier has been reduced in rank to the E-1 grade and given a Bad Conduct Discharge after a panel of soldiers and officers ruled he deliberately destroyed three Humvee vehicles being airdropped during an exercise by cutting the straps to their parachutes.

The issue has been covered closely by the Military Times and the site reported Wednesday that Sgt. John Skipper, a Germany-based cavalry scout, was convicted of destruction of government property and making false statements.

The event happened in 2016. Skipper was found guilty of three instances of destroying military property worth over $500 and lying.

Military officials said Silver was not a parachute rigger, but a scout who was told to help the Italy-based parachute riggers for the exercise.

Video of the incident went viral on the web, and showed the vehicles exploding on impact after they were dropped during the Saber Junction exercise at the Hohenfels Training Area in Germany.

A soldier on the ground, making the video, can be heard cheering and laughing and using very offensive language.

The military said the maximum penalty would have been 10 years in jail, a dishonorable discharge and loss of all pay.

...

That sounds about right. Why was he let off so easily?

He needs to do time in Leavenworth.

No kidding. I suspect he’s in a “protected” class somehow.

"Three Humvees cost $500?"

No, the code makes destruction of property worth over $500 a more serious offense, so if you want to charge someone with this more serious offense you charge them destruction of property worth over $500. Whether the property is actually worth $510 or $50,000 its the same charge.

The video and comments (100% )lack the one basic quality of innocent coincidence.
The video was made in 100% knowledge and anticipation. Premeditated.

You can bet that, had he made one off-handed remark to a transgender squad member, he’d have been sent away for years. But not for deliberate destruction of our property.

Never been on a drop zone I take it?

Soldier does a bad PLF and breaks his leg? Don’t expect any sympathy from those who watched it.

I saw a full pallet of C Rations burn in. Looked just like an A Bomb going off. Lots of “Oh”, “Ah’s” and other comments on that one.

Pulled LZ duty at Ft Campbell with the 101st in '67 for test drops of pallet loaded 55gal drums of water training for fuel drops. Had more than a few side straps break resulting in 4 to 8 barrels coming down like bombs. Learned to keep the jeep running watching the sky with the foot on the clutch after popping smoke for the pilots. 55 gal metal drum looked like a pancake after they hit.

Give him to the navy and let them use him for catapult practice. They got the new cool electromagnetic ones now.
