Expert panelists said at an event Tuesday that environmental degradation disproportionately affects communities of color, and that promoting racial diversity among environmental science researchers could help address the issue.
The Environmentalists of Color Collective at UCLA hosted a forum on climate justice, featuring a panel of environmental justice advocates from Los Angeles. ECC aimed to raise awareness and start a dialogue about environmental racism, said Liliana Epps, a second-year gender studies student and member of ECC who helped host the event.
Epps said environmental racism and injustice refer to disproportionate allocations of environmental resources. For example, pollutants tend to affect neighborhoods populated by people of color more often than they affect white communities, she said.
Felicia Montes, an activist and community organizer who spoke at the event, said she encourages students to continue to hold dialogues on the importance of environmental justice.
Nalleli Cobo, an environmental justice advocate and panelist, said she became involved in environmental activism at the age of 9.
Aaron Luxur said that as a person of color and environmental activist, he started Vegan Voices of Color to challenge what he thinks is a whitewashing prevalent in environmental organizations. He said he also challenges the fashion industry by creating sustainable clothing.
Marjan Abubo, a fourth-year history student and member of ECC, said environmental justice campaigns at schools such as UC Berkeley inspired the club at UCLA. He added he wants to see people of color play a more active role in addressing climate change.
We dont just want to diversify the environmental field, but we also want to diversify the faculty and academia around this issue, Abubo said.

Good luck building the next refinery in Beverly Hills.
Environmental Justice
... maybe proponents of it should find a bear to eat them?
I mean, they’ve been eating responsible and try to be trim and fit so they should be bear superfood by now.
If they really cared about nature they would be bear scat by now.
Once upon a time there was some pollution in the valley.
Whites were unaffected though because Whites are all rich and could buy mansions on the hill above the valley.
Everybody else suffered as Whites laughed and laughed and drank wine made by the people in the labor camps down in the valley.
- according to the presiding narrative -
“...environmental justice.”
Who comes up with this shiite? And how can Whitey get in on the scam?
*SNORT*
Hamstring ‘em, smear ‘em with peanut butter and noney and stake ‘em out for the bears an coyotes. That’ll get ‘em close to nature.
The Race Hustlers are trying out new tricks. #FakeScience
Well now. I see we now have colored environmentalists. And they have spoken.
But I don’t see how one can be racist towards the environment. How is that possible?
And remember, these young agitators go on to work in government, or work in social-welfare or community organizing - funded by government taxes and debt.
And we wonder why manufacturing leaves the USA?
Racial reparations in the name of Mother Earth.
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
These students of stupidity will be living in their parent’s spare room for the foreseeable future-after graduating with with no real work skills no company or corporation will hire them...
Environmental degradation disproportionally affects poor people - because rich people have the political connections to assure that factories, power plants, oil wells, coal mines, rail yards, etc., are not built in their neighborhoods.
That's the way it has been, is and probably always will be. And maybe that's worth a discussion.
But it doesn't have a damn thing to do with race.
Love it! Congress trying to control the sun. Haha!
I have this conversation frequently with my Portland, OR niece and her middle-school whelps all the time.
It usually ends when I tell them, “OK. I promise to financially support your stupid, irrational environmental justice programs without reservation when you can answer two questions. First, what is the average annual temperature of earth TODAY and second, what is the IDEAL average temperature for the planet earth.” I have yet to receive an answer.
Similarly, I have yet to receive a Christmas or Birthday card from them in 66 years either. Coincidence?
They might try that as part of the campaign platform next time.
Too many of the masses will believe it.
It was that way in the South in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s ; the northern companies would come down south, build their factories, brutally exploiting the poor whites all the while.
This was written about in a collection of essays called “I’ll take my stand” in the 1930’s; it is available on Amazon. It is a very eye-opening read from a point of view that people today do not want to consider.
environmental degradation disproportionately affects communities of color,
COMMUNITIES OF COLOR CREATE ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION!!!
These people really are Stupid.
There’s no such thing, these people are insane.
Cotton sucks allofasudden?
