This performance is from “Till the Clouds Roll By” of 1946. Jerome’s body was barely cold before Hollywood slapped together a movie musical of his tunes.

If you’ve played classical piano, you’ll recognize the intro as a little item stolen from Debussy. This 1949 recording is very well produced, and Mario shows how he could move from opera to American musical without difficulty.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

THE GIRL FROM UTAH

Two be-bop greats with heroin problems created this masterpiece from 1952. Charlie would die young, and Chet would move to Amsterdam to find a home that he could share with his demons. It’s a tribute to a song that it could survive being disassembled and reassembled so well in a jazz form.

Dinah’s early death was a tragedy for jazz. This 1956 recording features the young, unknown Quincy Jones as her arranger and conductor. Yes, Quincy is that old! (You should hear what Quincy said recently about rap and hip-hop.)

Thank you Kathy! Weekend. yes. I have put together a support rally for a WWII hero, Charles DeGlopper here in my town of Grand Island, NY.

Here’s the story as to why and why I am doing this tomorrow. Sad state of affairs in todays crazy world.
