Russia warships stalk US aircraft carrier in ‘cat and mouse chase’
The Daily Star (UK) ^ | May 12th, 2018 | By Henry Holloway

USS Harry S. Truman has been pursued around the Med by a group of Russian frigates led by warship Yaroslav Mudry.

Video of the incident shows a Russian vessel in the distance shadowing the carrier and its destroyer escort.

Footage was shared by ITV as a team of news reporters visited the US warship.

The vessel is the US’s main weapon against ISIS as it launches strikes on their positions in Syria.

War tensions have flared however after the US, France and Britain launched airstrikes against Vladimir Putin’s pal Bashar al-Assad.

USS Harry S. Truman – the 116,000-ton vessel – is the flagship of the US Navy’s mighty Carrier Strike Group 8.

The warship set sail from the US last month along with a destroyer squadron to become US President Donald Trump’s leading force in the Middle East.

It has been joined by guided-missile destroyers USS Arleigh Burke, USS Bulkeley, USS Forrest Sherman, USS Jason Dunham and USS The Sullivans and USS Farragut.

We’d go total emcon and no nav lights then ahead flank until they got up to speed. Then we’d go back full until they figured out the closure rate was 45kts, then back to ahead flank. After a few iterations of that they’d normally be DIW belching smoke and we’d turn back on the lights and radars and steam away.

No turns? Just ahead flank then back then ahead. Straight forward and straight back. That’s amazing. Destroyers are what us sub sailors try to avoid. Some times it works great then other times it don’t. I was told if the carriers want to leave any of us “they’re gone”. When we were hunting it was always quiet.

That, reportedly, has not helped. And, as the investigations into the recent collision incidents have shown, training all over the Navy is in a pretty bad state right now.

My point is this - our Navy, all branches of it, is NOT what it was as little as ten years ago and its capabilities have been severely degraded through ‘advanced social experimentation and engineering’ and a severe lack of training combined with budget cuts and stupidity at higher levels. (See: Stupid littoral ship program, DDX-1000 that doesn’t have any ammo or working missiles.) Under Trump, the Navy is starting to recover - but it still isn’t the titan it was when Bush I left office or even in the condition it was in when Bush II left.

Gimme a break....Newspeople were called and allowed to visit the ship. I don't like beating war drums for the fun of it.

And since when do we refer to the Mediterranian as "The Med".

If you are going to party with Russians you had better bring enormous amounts of vodka.

Film:
Yaroslav Mudry (1982)
2h 36min | Action, Drama, War | August 1982 (Soviet Union)

Yaroslav Mudry anti-sub ship, with some ‘stealth’ tech.

“And since when do we refer to the Mediterranian as “The Med”.

It’s common, even dominant vernacular in the USN.

Kind of like bringing a knife to a gunfight. And like Harry said, “Do you feel lucky?” But they don’t feel stupid, either.

” inviting the crews of the Russian ships to a sailors beach party at the next port of call, beer, and BBQ provided by the US Navy”

On Sunday afternoons we would party on steel beach together during the cold war.

They got beer with their BBQ, we got soda.

We’d pull up closer, maybe 150 meters, bring out the boom boxes and BBQs.

It was quite friendly.

They have ASW issues since the S-3 Vikings went to the boneyard with no replacement.

They've got P-8 Poseidons flying out of Sigonella and plenty of MH-60 Romeos on the carriers and supporting smallboys.

A Carrier Group is an astounding amount of firepower unmatched by any Navy.

The problem with today's modern CVN is that it is too expensive to risk losing.

The Russky admiral was probably “creamin’ in his jeans” at the quality and competency of the US force. Have no fear we are the most powerful nation on the face of the earth.
