Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry.

While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division

Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951

Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H.

G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952

Citation:

Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

RIP, you don’t get medals for stuff that you want to repeat.

I hope Trump ends this Chinese fire drill.

Glad you had such a good day. I imagine the phone call from your son was the highlight. Hope all’s going well with him and the family.

A pretty laid-back day here though I did yank weeds this evening. I need to grab the clothes I was wearing, that are now on the washer, to pick all the sticky seeds off of them. LOL

The kittehs behaved themselves relatively well today so that’s about as kind a thing they did. Only Lily was a brat.

It was the highlight of the day! He’s still nagging for us to move there, but I’m like “lalalalalalallalallaaaaaa” I don’t HEAR you! LOL!

Oh, stickers? Nasty things! I hate stickers! We haven’t had them in our yard since we planted St. Augustine grass. It takes over when it gets plenty of water.

Glad the kitties were mostly nice. Except Lily. What was her deal?

Tell him when he buys a house for you up there, you’ll move. LOL!

These weeds aren’t the ones with the seeds that are long and black and like stickers, though we have those too.
These have little round green seeds that stick to everything. And the plants are sticky, too ... leaves and stems. They’re vines and take over a flower bed in a heartbeat.

My clothes were covered with seeds and there were a few stuck in my hair. I hadn’t pulled it back in a pony tail and it kept falling forward when I bent over.

Lily gets in brat mode sometimes and picks on the other cats. Today, Kiwi and Tatiana were her targets. She seems to have settled down now after a few butt swats.

Yep, it’s been a pretty lazy day overall. Had my butt parked in front of the computer watching livestreaming of the WILD fissure that opened up at HI this morning and am watching it as I type. It’s gotten really wild the last half hour or so and is an amazing thing to see.

Your day certainly wasn’t a lazy one! You’ve been a busy bee.

Yeah, weeding is LOADS of fun - HA! - but I just couldn’t stand that one bed another day. The sticky weeds had engulfed the irises and daylilies and needed to be cleaned out. It looks much better now and the plants are happy to get a clear shot at sunshine again.

The ol’ back is telling me it isn’t all that happy but it isn’t screaming. I was careful how I moved.

Well, I did remind him that our house is paid for and we can’t really afford house payments. He wants to buy land and have 2 houses on it. He’s all about Dave Ramsey, so he won’t have payments for long. If I could just come to Texas in the winter..... LOL!

I guess they all get in brat mode at some point. The other morning mine got into a tiff when coming into the house. They hardly ever fight any more, and I think having spent the whole night out with other cats around had them on edge.

I’ve been watching a special about Prince Harry and Marla. Interesting. I hope she copes better than poor Diana did.
