Actually, against the three competitors (to include TBS)...Kimmel was occasionally number one in the ratings game. I think the network came to find more advertisers were questioning the Trump-bashing and declining opportunities, even if it was the number one show.
You have to think about this as well...could you maintain this anti-Trump theme for possibly eight years, and then what happens if another Trump-character appears in 2024, could you continue running four more years of anti-Trump-like jokes with the next guy?
There’s also this trend of folks dumping the networks and going off to Netflix...which a lot of college-age kids are doing.
