- Because they're too stupid to realize how stupid they are. (Dunning Krieger)
- It's a chance to get their faces out on TV, and they don't care if they look bad
- They know that people who think like they do will support them no matter how dishonest or stupid they're shown to be, and this is a chance to reach out to these same people - "moms demand action" comes to mind
These are just the reasons I can think of offhand
