I still remember an old woman in 1968 who actually believed that gun registration, promoted after the Bobby Kennedy killing, would cure all the crime problems in the USA.
May have mentioned this earlier, but Lyndon Johnson was angry & frustrated when he signed the GCA into law that year, because he failed to get national gun registration and licensing of owners, with which he intended to avenge the assassinations of JFK, MLK, & RFK, all of which were perceived as having been carried out by rightwingers.
Google LBJ’s remarks at the signing; nearest the U.S. ever came to having a dictator. But karma caught with him just four years later.
