A resource officer may have prevented a massacre after a 19-year-old former student allegedly brought a gun inside an Illinois school and opened fire.
The suspect shot at the Dixon High School resource officer, who returned fire and struck the gunman, City Administrator Danny Langloss said. The officer was not hit by gunfire and the suspect had non-life threatening injuries. No students or staff members were injured in the incident. The suspect was placed in police custody.

When there is someone to shoot back, the outcome can be very different.

Definitely did NOT make the big three news, no dead bodies, no weepy teens, no teddy bears piled up in the street. NOT NEWS.

How did that former student get a gun into the school is the big question?
Aren’t guns prohibited inside the school building?
Do we need a second law that prohibits former students from bringing a gun to school?

I hear ya, and pretty sure it is a gun free zone. That 19 year-old probably just misunderstood.

It’s also possible that no one ever taught him how to read.
Did they have a picture of a gun with a red line through it? They may not have done that, and they’re graduates needed it.

I grew up without a cop in any of my schools so when the Florida school shooting happened I had no idea that a resource officer was a cop with a gun. I thought it was some other staff position for the school. I think calling a cop a “resource officer” is wrong and I also think it contributes to some student’s disrespect for authority. Why is this position called a “resource officer” and not a cop?

I haven’t the slightest idea.
Like you I never saw a cop in school (K-12) unless it was a city PD officer giving a talk on safety or the hazards of using Mary Jane.
Unfortunately times have changed and the nut cases are on the streets now instead of reform schools or mental facilities.

Candles.
It isn't an "official tragedy" unless there are candles.

Why is this position called a resource officer and not a cop?
The SROs (school resource officer) in my area want themselves to be seen as less threatening than police officers. They get to know students, interact with them on a daily basis, and thus gain their trust and respect rather than be feared. This allows that SRO to learn about who are the troubled kids and keep an ear to the ground for kids who need help. Kind of a camp counselor and security guard rolled into one. I'm all for arming teachers and all that, but I think it also helps to have these guys and gals embedded with the school kids.
As with anything, your mileage may vary. Most SROs probably do a great job but as we know with Parkland, some are worthless cowards who feel nothing for the kids they serve and just let them get shot. Where I live in MO, our schools are also pretty tame and seldom, if ever, have real violence on the property, so the presence of an armed, uniformed, security person to project authority (and protect the teachers) is not a requirement.
