In fact, since the start of this year, the percentage of Americans looking on their nation’s leader favorably has risen steadily.
This has caused liberals no small amount of consternation. But in a new analysis of voters’ attitudes toward Trump — derived from more than a million interviews with voters in all 50 states — SurveyMonkey offers the most satisfying explanation of the president’s improving fortunes to date, while also putting Trump’s rebound in edifying perspective. Here’s a quick rundown of the pollster’s findings:
How Trump has really been performing: Trump’s approval numbers are more remarkable for their stability than their modest gains in recent months. The president enjoyed a honeymoon period in which his favorability rating sat in the mid-40s (SurveyMonkey’s poll is a couple points more favorable to Trump than the average one, but its trend line is consistent with those of virtually every pollster).
Over the ensuing months, as Trump tried to shepherd health-care legislation through Congress, his standing diminished among Republican and independent voters, losing about five percentage points of support from each of those groups. There’s been almost no variation in Democratic attitudes toward Trump.
By December, Trump’s approval rating bottomed out at 40 percent. Then, shortly after he signed his tax cuts into law, his support from Republicans and independents began to steadily rebound. As of this month, the president has regained about three percentage points of support from both those groups since his nadir, in late 2017.
Why Trump’s approval has gone up: at the start of his presidency, 79 percent of conservative Republicans believed that he could “get things done” — by December 2017, that had fallen to just 60 percent. Once the tax cuts passed, however, conservatives’ confidence in Trump’s “git ’er done” abilities spiked back up into the mid-70s.
Which is to say: While the actual substance of Trump’s tax law mattered less to strong GOP partisans than the frustration of seeing their team repeatedly lose high-profile legislative battles. And the sense that Trump was ineffective — weakened his position among some Republicans and independents. Once the president proved he could, in fact, “get things done,” however, his image with such voters recovered.
The other wind in Trump’s sails has been the expanding economy. Between early summer 2017 and this month, the public’s approval of the president’s economic management increased by five percentage points, from 44 to 49 percent.
There is a small subset of the electorate that sees Trump as a scoundrel, but doesn’t mind, so long as the economy is growing, and Congress appears to be doing things.
One reason for Trump’s relatively soft Republican support: Younger GOP voters — especially, younger female GOP voters — aren’t too crazy about the guy. While the president enjoys the “strong approval” of 64 percent of Republican men over 45, he gets such affection from just 37 percent of GOP women below that age.
What all this adds up to: Trump has regained some support, but remains less popular than he was on Inauguration Day. Much of the support he does have is soft. Should economic conditions worsen, it would not be surprising for his approval ratings to drop.
But if current trends persist, Trump is unlikely to see his approval rating fall. His weakness at that point derived from his dearth of legislative accomplishments. The tax cut abolished that liability. And because the House map is skewed so profoundly in the GOP’s favor, it’s quite possible that Trump’s present level of public support could prove robust enough to allow Republicans to retain the House, which would merely require them to keep the margin of their popular-vote loss to about seven percentage points.

I do have a clue. Congress has the ability to do a lot more than they currently do and have done.
Especially with regards to this farce and witch hunt that Rosenstein put on us. I find it hard to believe that our elected officials can get bullied around by lawyers from the DOJ. I find it hard to believe that they can consistently be ignored by those very same lawyers from the DOJ and agents from the FBI.
I find it hard to believe that the fiscal Conservative, Paul Ryan, would force the Presidents hand on some shitty Omnibus bill. Ohhhh, wait, we needed the military spending. I don’t know all the rules, but maybe there’s a mechanism for the Speaker of the House to separate that from the Omnibus and force a public vote on it. But, you know, we can’t have anything like that, might embarrass a few folks.
I find it hard to believe that we still don’t know exactly how much money was paid out to alleged “victims” of sexual harassment, who did it and what funds were used.

I can see your points but we need every vote we can get. President Trump wouldn’t have gotten so much good done if the Dems controlled the House.

And I agree that we need every vote that we can get, but the President has received just as much obstruction from Republican’s, who have shown that they can’t separate their hatred for him from what is good for the country. 20 more Ryan’s, Graham’s, McCain’s, Flakes’s, Collins’, doesn’t do us much good, IMHO. Again, that’s just my opinion.
Just look at the Senate Intel Comm report. All but one person, Cotton, on the committee hates the President. Is it a shock that the committee says that the Russians interfered? I sure hope they have proof.
And a recent poll, just like one in Europe, says that immigration is the #1 issue with voters, this year. And now we have 25 GOP Reps wanting mass amnesty and Ryan telling them that he’s working with the President to pass something. And Ryan is an amnesty guy. So, if it happens, and there’s a chance it could, it’s over. There’s been a 230% increase in folks coming across the border. They’re coming because they’re being told that something is going to happen. So, if it passes, in any form, how is anything different than if the Dem’s were there?
I just think of what would be going on if all the Republican’s lined up, Shoulder to Shoulder, with the man, what could be accomplished.
It’s good his ratings are going up, but keep in mind that the results of the election depend crucially on who shows up to vote. It those people who are giving him good ratings don’t show, then it could still be ugly irrespective of the polls.

The reason why is very, very simple: impeachment. If the Dems get control - whether it is Nancy Pelosi or some other Leftist idiot in charge, they WILL impeach Trump on some pretext. That the Senate may not even take up the trial end of that process (like with Clinton), or if they do and the Senate votes NOT to convict, doesn’t much matter - just like with Clinton, Trump’s most effective days will be behind him. Me, I like the vast majority of his judicial choices; I like his strong national defense policies and the people he’s put on his foreign policy/defense team; I like his tax policies (they aren’t perfect, but they’re a damned sight better than any Dem’s policies); I like his slashing of regulations and his willingness (even eagerness) to shove the Dems’ faces into steaming piles of dogcrap every chance he gets. Impeach him, and those days are pretty much over, and I would bet that he wouldn’t even seek reelection (and, if he did, it’d be MUCH harder to accomplish).
So, if you prefer some Leftist hack to be POTUS on 1/20/2021, then don’t care about whether the Republicans maintain the House, don’t contribute to any of them, and stay home that day instead of voting. OTOH, if you actually give a damn about the future of this country, you’ll get out there and support your district’s Congressional candidate and vote for your Republican Senatorial candidate if that seat is up for grabs. It is really that simple.
And, NO, this is not a choice between the perfect good and the perfect bad - Trump and his administration are surely not perfect, nor will they ever be so. But “compared to WHAT?” is the real question. The Dems are not perfectly bad...but they’re lots closer to that than the Pubbies are to perfectly good. Remember Patton’s maxim: “The perfect is the enemy of the good.” I’ll take good anytime, but particularly after the Obama’s 8 years, and the revelations about how his underlings have completely hijacked our judicial system. Right now, 25 Republican members of the US House of Representatives are trying to force their colleagues to vote on 5 bills, to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Republicans that probably ran on securing the border, blah blah blah. Right now, those 25 are actually colluding with the Democrats to try and make it happen.
Right now, Ryan is apparently telling them to relax because he is working with the President on a solution and that if they push these votes, it could hurt them in November. So, a Pro-Amnesty Speaker of the House, is basically telling these 25 or so, to play some more underhanded politics, STFU, while he tries to work a deal with the President, behind closed doors. Will it be an amnesty vote, after the November elections, when lame ducks or amnesty supporters can vote without any risks? We’ll have to wait and see.
Will any type of amnesty pass the Senate, now? Doubtful. But with Republicans like these sh*theads sitting at the table, it doesn’t matter if they’re a Republican or Dem, the results are the same.

We might, barely, squeak out the White House in 2020, but that will be it. It will be over. There has been a 230% increase in activity at the border. That is with a President that is locking people up and deporting them. Why are they coming in waves? Who is telling them to come? What are they being told? If they get amnesty, they’ll get the privilege to vote the following week and then we’ll never see a Republican President, again. And our government becomes no different than Venezuela’s within 2-4 years.
