Take into account 80% of communication is nonverbal (in a face to face setting). Now, add in most kids, and young adults, do most of their communications via social messaging platforms - they're communicating in 20% nonverbal zone......and without the benefit of speed, pitch, and inflection. This is creating a generation of people significantly lacking interpersonal skills.

Suddenly, some #ssh#l# on psychotropic drugs is rejected, and not in the secret just between you and me, you're just playing hard to get, and restraining orders are just another way of saying "I love you" kinda way.........but publicly. This is a no kidding rejection, and cognitive dissonance smashing reality brick.
I'm not excusing the #$*^&#*$#'s actions (I think he should swing), but this is the emerging society taken to the nth degree. All selfish all the time; happiness in pill form; and instant gratification.
When reality hits that fantasyland - it's tragic.
