With the 2018 midterms months away and the 2020 presidential election cycle approaching rapidly, Democrats are considering how to improve their poor showings in 2014 and 2016. The party has been debating — sometimes heatedly — how to do this. Which voters should they target? How should Democrats target them?
But here’s what’s clear: White voters have been fleeing the Democratic Party, and that’s a big reason Democrats are looking to rebound from back-to-back losses.
Whites have slowly but consistently moved away from the Democratic Party. These recent losses are on top of Democrats’ losses among Southern whites during the 1960s and 1970s after Democrats’ support of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Bill Clinton won 49 percent of the white two-party vote in 1996. Al Gore won 43 percent in 2000. John F. Kerry won 41 percent in 2004. Barack Obama won a slightly larger share in 2008, but then dropped to only 39 percent in his 2012 reelection bid. Hillary Clinton got the same percentage as Obama.
Obama was able to mask the Democratic Party’s weakness among whites by prompting record-high turnout among African Americans, as well as strong turnout from other Democratic-leaning minority groups. Hillary Clinton was unable to generate the same level of enthusiasm from racial and ethnic minorities.

The Democrats casually throw out insults like that....claiming they lost Southern Whites because of racism on their part REFUSING to acknowledge that there just might be other reasons....namely that the Democrats became the party of socialism and big government and centralizing power in Washington DC ALL of which White Southerners have always hated and been dead set against....yes going back to the founding of the Republic when they were all Jeffersonian Democrats.
By doubling down on the socialism and insulting White Southerners for not supporting it, they comprehensively lost Southern Whites. When you insult people and show nothing but contempt for them, their history, values and culture at every turn they tend to not like you right back.
The Democrats are in the midst of doing the exact same thing with working class Whites in the Midwest right now. It is “flyover country” after all. It must MUST be “racism” on their part - nevermind that many of them voted for Obama twice. Their view can’t possibly have any legitimacy.
Go ahead Donkeys. See where that gets you. I’m thinking it will work out as well for you as it worked out in Dixie where you get massively trounced in every single election.
Democrats coddle every group in the country except taxpaying Whites. They tell them,”Shut up and pay up,” using White money to buy Black votes.

I wonder if anyone has every followed up on workers who USED to be in Unions to see if their lot in life has improved.
With unions decreasing so much over the last 20 years it would be interesting.
I suspect with zero data that a good number of the whites who fled the democrat party are previous union members whose eyes were opened.
This was a well written and researched news story, surprising that it was printed in the Washington Post.
The only gains the Democrat party have made with white voters are young liberal college graduates already living in heavy Democrat states. I know the type and still don’t get how you can work 60 hours a week and vote for people who want to take away more of your hard earned money. They also lose a good portion of this demographic when the women marry and have multiple children. The liberal guys will typically stay liberal but 1/3 to 1/2 of the women change their voting habits.
Democraps’ tilt to the hard left indeed began with LBJ proclaiming his Great Society in 1965, the same year Teddy the Swimmer’s immigration bill opened the floodgates for Third Worlders to swarm in (giving Dems hordes of new voters). It accelerated in 1968 and hit full tilt in 1972 with the McGovern nomination.
Eight years of Obama have added the anti-white factor to any future platform of theirs.

Much more likely the LEFTIST move of the Democrats, in opposing the Vietnam War, and pushing for huge government regulation starting in the late '60s precipitated the move to the GOP--not racism.
They not only hate white people, they also hate citizens.
My (very white) Jewish grandparents came to this country between 1912 and 1923. Being poor immigrants, they naturally gravitated to the Dems and their promises (plus everyone else in their community was voting for the Dems). However, my father’s parents ran from Communism in Russia. Over time, even my hardcore FDR-loving grandpa ended up voting for Nixon because he was a staunch anti-Soviet leader.
Fast forward to the last 20 or so years - even several of the previously left-leaning people in my extended family have started voting Republican, as they see that the Dems are the party of high taxes, onerous regulations, opposition to small business and kowtowing to the lazy in our society, plus being the party of weakness on foreign and defense affairs. In short, they see that Dems as the US Socialist Party or worse. Note that my parents saw through the Dems in the 1950s for these reasons, and haven’t looked back since, and I’ve been against the Dems for my entire life.
My fervent dream is that at least 25% of the black, and 40% of the Hispanics, in this country realize the same thing - and vote Republican. If 1/3 - 40% of the Jews can do it, then anything is possible. Things are beginning to move in that direction, and that is why the Dems have been losing seats on every level of government for over a decade - even with all of the Turd World immigration that they’ve shoved down our throats since 1965.
How I think the Republicans will be elected is a combination of two things. First is the Obama era job market that caused so many despair deaths coupled with the opioid crisis, second is the hard shift to the most hateful members of the Left. The Trump job market has been a big improvement and people now have more money in their pockets thanks to the tax plan. If Trump succeeds in pulling the party away from the Ryan cliff and to the center, I think the Democrats are going to have a very bleak November indeed. I lived in the Jim Crow South when it was a solid one-party region and that 'one-party' was Democrat. When Republicans moved South from the North they registered as democrats because whoever won the local primary WAS the WINNER (because NO Republicans were ever elected to anything). So if Republicans wanted their vote to matter they had to vote in the primary -- which required registering as 'democrat'. Voting in the general election was worthless because the democrat always won.
As soon as the 60's came around and Republicans could have a voice in the racist South - and a chance at electing someone, Republicans ran to the court house and changed their party affiliation back to Republican.
All the Southern democrat racists stayed Democrats. Lester Maddox was the only known racists to become a Republican...
