Education Secretary Betsy DeVos under fire for saying schools can report undocumented students

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos set off a furor over comments she made to members of Congress suggesting that schools should decide whether or not to report undocumented students and their families to federal immigration authorities.

"I think that is — that is a school decision," DeVos said during her testimony before the House Education and Workforce Committee after Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., pressed her on the issue of undocumented students. "It's a local community decision and again I refer to the fact that we have laws and we also are compassionate and I urge this body to do its job and address and clarify where there is confusion around this."

Espaillat immediately rebuked the secretary's statement, stressing that immigration policies are defined and executed by the federal government, not by communities.

"Let me just remind Madam Chair that immigration law is federal law," he said. "It's not a local law. It's not governed by a municipality."

"You cannot have immigration law for one state be different for another state and it applies to everybody across the country," he added.

I sure hope the media doesn’t want the President to interfere. They have made it clear that would be unprecedented for a President to meet with members of his cabinet and their staff.

So, the Democrats are against sanctuary cities.

YES!

YES!!

At last! I was wondering how those kids managed to get enrolled when I was in school in the early 2000's.

I had to have all my shot records, birth certificate you name it enroll in school.

How the hell do these illegals get around that?

Also, the school are always crying about budget issues here in Kansas, well if we didn't have all these illegal children in our system we wouldn't have these money problems now then would we?

Does federal law provide that local schools must report illegals? If not absolutely, as a condition of accepting federal aid?

Agreed. From my point of view she’s saying that the schools need to make these decisions and not have to obey Sanctuary state laws.

Wait just a darned minute here.

You mean school officials can actually do things that comply with the spirit of the U. S. Constitution?

Are they sure of that?

There must be a misinterpretation here somewhere.

Where’s the small print. I need to read the small print.

The courts (God bless ‘em) have ruled that public schools have to take any human who alleges her or she is of school age and who lives in the in the district regardless of immigration status. They might be able to exclude a citizen who is lacking shots, but certainly not an immigrant.

Isn’t it disgusting that a individual in an official office can be berated for encouraging lawful behavior.
