THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

SHOW BOAT: “MAKE BELIEVE”

This is very early Bing before he became America’s favorite baritone crooner. It’s from 1928 when he worked for Paul Whiteman, “the man who made a lady out of jazz.” In those days, Bing and Bix Beiderbecke would hold marathon drinking bouts until all hours, and Bing was a real badass, a genuine brawler. He was also a borderline tenor, not having settled on a vocal range.

Note that this is an electric recording, where the string bass can finally be heard, although it is still being backed by a tuba.

Whiteman in his final years in the Sixties would become an ardent fan of rock and roll.

My Dad had Show Boat in 16mm and used to run it frequently for us in the living room (Years before VCR or DVD’s or even the Movie Channel) It was so much more serious than the other musical movies we had such as “Naughty Marietta” or “Rosemarie”.

Back in the 60’s it seemed daring. I can’t imagine how stunning it was to audiences when it first came out.

The audience filed out silently, some of them in tears. It changed everything about the American musical theater.

Yes indeed. It was pivotal.

Racism was also a theme in South Pacific, as well as, to a degree, The King and I. (Cultural Clash).

None of these would have been possible without Show Boat.

SHOW BOAT: “MAKE BELIEVE”

”God has entered the room.” – Fats Waller, upon seeing Art Tatum enter the nightclub. His piano technique was ferocious, and no one has come close to duplicating him.

Welcome to the Canteen, BuffaloJack. The “happy” is a celebration and remembrance of our heroes throughout the years who fought and died to keep all of us free and able to enjoy our freedom.

The odd thing is that Show Boat decried racism, and yet there were people who thought the show was racist!

It’s a puzzlement.
