Texas Tribune Offers Sad Turnout News for Lone Star State Democrats
Newsbusters ^ | May 27, 2018 | P.J. Gladnick

My NewsBusters colleague Tom Blumer has pointed out how old media outlets have failed to report on the stunning shift in the Reuters/Ipsos poll showing the midterm election choices swinging towards the Republicans. Not only is much of the mainstream media ignoring polls showing this shift they are also failing to report on evidence on the ground in elections themselves that enthusiasm for the Democrats is waning.

One such significant bit of evidence occurred in the recent Texas primary runoff elections in which Democrat turnout hit a record low. This was reported by the Texas Tribune, normally a liberal cheerleader for the Democrats to the extent that they refrained from reporting on a significant setback in the Wendy Davis campaign in 2014 when she was running for governor in that state. However, even the Texas Tribune can't hide the sad truth as it reported on May 22 that Voter turnout in a Texas Democratic gubernatorial runoff hasn’t been this low in nearly 100 years:

In 1994 ? No Democrat has won the Governorship after her.

As for other statewide offices, the Dems actually did well in 1994, if only because there were no open races, all incumbents. Bob Bullock for Lt Governor (won reelection), Dan Morales for Attorney General (also won reelection), John Sharp for Comptroller (won reelection), Martha Whitehead for Treasurer (appointed by Ma Richards, won her first race, and then the office was abolished in 1996) and Garry Mauro for Land Commissioner (also won reelection).

Only Dubya running for Governor knocked off the sole incumbent in 1994 (Ma Richards) and Rick Perry as Agriculture Commissioner winning reelection. From 1991-95, excluding other offices such as Supreme Court and Railroad Commissioners, Perry was the only Republican in statewide office. In 1998, the Republicans won every one of the open statewide offices I cited above from the Democrats and have not lost them to date.

Oops, made one mistake. There were two Republicans elected statewide in 1990, Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison to the defunct Treasurer position. When Hutchison was elected to the Senate, Ma Richards appointed a Democrat to her seat (Martha Whitehead), leaving Perry as the lone Republican going into the 1994 elections.
