~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: USS Nimitz, California

USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a supercarrier in the United States Navy, the lead ship of its class. She is one of the largest warships in the world. She was laid down, launched and commissioned as CVAN-68, but was redesignated CVN-68 (nuclear-powered multimission aircraft carrier) on 30 June 1975 as part of the fleet realignment of that year.

Nimitz was homeported at Naval Station Norfolk until 1987, when she was relocated to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. After her second nuclear reactor refueling in 2001, Nimitz was relocated to NAS North Island, in San Diego, California.

The ship was named for Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded the Pacific fleet in World War II and was the Navy’s last five-star admiral. Unlike all subsequent Nimitz class carriers, Nimitz only uses its namesake's surname. It is also the only carrier of its class and the most recent supercarrier not to be named for someone who held elective office in the United States.

The keel of USS Nimitz was laid on June 22, 1968 at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Va. It was destined to become the largest warship ever. The ship was commissioned May 3, 1975, at Pier 12, Naval Station Norfolk, Va.

CVN 68 first deployment began on July 7, 1976 when it departed Norfolk for the Mediterranean. Included in the task force were the nuclear-powered cruisers USS South Carolina and USS California. The deployment marked the first time in 10 years that nuclear-powered ships had deployed to the Mediterranean.

In November 1976, it was awarded the coveted Battle "E" from Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet, for being the most efficient and foremost aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Fleet. The ship returned to Norfolk Feb. 7, 1977 after a seven-month deployment.

Learn More About The History Of The USS Nimitz HERE!

  • NIMITZ reaches over 18 stories high from to keel to the top of the mast
  • Eight steam turbine generators each produce 8,000 kilowatts of electrical power, enough to serve a small city

  • NIMITZ' Food Services Department provides 18000 - 20000 meals a day
  • NIMITZ can stock at least 90 days of refrigerated and dry storage goods
  • NIMITZ' two barber shops trim over 1,500 heads each week

  • The Post Office processes more than one million pounds of mail each year
  • The ship has a fully equipped dental facility, staffed by five dentists
  • The Medical Department is manned by six doctors including a surgeon, who provide everything from surgery to hydro-therapy. The ship also features an 80 - bed hospital ward.

  • Four destilling units enable NIMITZ engineers to make over 400,000 gallons of fresh water a day, for use by the propulsion plants, catapults and crew.

Howdy, LUV.

Hope your day has been good, other than too hot to handle.

Well, it was darn hot, that’s for sure! Hope your day was more comfortable than 101 with 19% humidity.

Hubby’s watering the yard. If he didn’t it would be crispy critters in a few more days of this.

Did y’all do anything exciting today? We didn’t. I did practically nothing. I feel guilty when hubby is working at the watering. He’s also getting dough ready for making bread and rolls.

Good evening, radu...a dry day? Is the rain on its way?
Were you and the kitties able to be outside and enjoy nice weather?

Mostly sunny here, but now starting to cloud up. Did a little more watering. Guest room ready to go. Laundry complete. Several threads complete. Homework ongoing. Reading the Medicare 2018 book now.

AND........I moved the 4 geraniums onto the deck. They spend the winter downstairs by a window with a timed light.

Ugh! Yep, too hot to handle. I feel for you hubby being outside watering the lawn. Even though it’s dark, it’s probably still right toasty.

Cooler her, for sure, and it rained this morning and afternoon. More, heavier rain is moving in shortly - - I figure in less than an hour.

Didn’t do anything exciting today. Too wet to go anywhere. Did do something that occupied a lot of the afternoon, though, and I’ll show you in a minute what it was.

Hey, Kathy.

A soggy day here and more rain moving in now. Could get a little dicey tomorrow as that storm system down south moves up here.

The cats haven’t been going out for a while, not since Hubby saw that d*** coydog and her pup in the front a couple of weeks ago. Too dangerous once again.

Sounds like you had a busy day! Now if you can just get that homework finished early so you’ll be able to get a nice long sleep tonight.

Awwwww....what a sweetheart! No wonder you couldn’t get anything else done. Was she/he another drop-off? Poor baby!

Thank goodness we have a couple of those traveling sprinklers, so at least all he has to do is reset the hose it travels on and can come back in. It just takes a very long time to get this whole yard, front and back, watered. I dread the bill next month!

Yes, someone threw her out like trash and she’d been out there a few days. She’s just bones under all that fur.
Finally got her settled in a chair snuggled up with Pixie a little while ago and my lap is mine again .... for a little while. LOL

Good thing having those sprinklers since it’s so horribly hot there during summer. it would really be a drag to have to stand outside the whole time.
