SACRAMENTO, Calif. A judge on Tuesday weighed how much information to release about the arrest of a former police officer accused of being the Golden State Killer.
Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Sweet began considering the issue after a hearing where attorneys for suspect Joseph DeAngelo argued that sharing the details could lead to an unfair trial.
Sweet indicated he's likely to release some information and is working with prosecutors and defense attorneys to determine how much to redact, which would continue to shield some details from public view.
The Associated Press and other news outlets are pushing for information from search and arrest warrants to be made public.

They have lots of DNA. Juries like DNA. He’s already convicted. The trial is just Kabuki theater.
Due process.
He’ll plead out if they take the death penalty off the table.
The public doesn’t need to know any more about this case than any other case.
Today’s hearing focused on what evidence, warrants etc should/will be allowed to be public. Court convened until Thursday for judge Sweet to consider the various motions.
The public NEEDS to know just one thing: to what degree did the perp being a former police officer shield him from suspicion or investigation?
Probably don’t want the public to know how DNA is shared from health screening or genealogy sites with the government to prosecute cold cases.
The DNA forensics they performed are largely already publicly disclosed. There’s a DeAngelo family tree available online. I think the public deserves to know everything about this bastard insofar as it doesn’t infringe on his right to a fair trial. I want to know what they found in his house, his cop schedule with the Exeter and Visalia PD’s, and his employment/life/movements during the 79-91 “mystery years”. I hope they go over his life and movements with a microscope.
Same here.
His life is a mystery thus far.
Evidence so damming that he can’t get a fair trial?
That’s a new defense designed to enrich defense attorneys at the taxpayers expense.
Did you see him in court?? In a cage similar to Europe scene. An adult size playpen.
Bet it was to protect him from attacks.
Have never seen that here before.
That cage is standard procedure for Sacramento Superior Court preliminary hearings. If/when it goes to trial, DeAngelo will appear in a suit, seated next to his lawyer.
