Liberals' worst nightmare: a second supreme court pick for Trump
The Guardian ^ | May 31, 2018 | Sabrina Siddiqui

hen, just weeks after taking office, Donald Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch to the supreme court, the newly minted US president made good on a central promise of his campaign: to replace the late justice Antonin Scalia with a bona fide conservative.

That moment foreshadowed what is shaping up to be among the most indelible of Trump’s triumphs – the reshaping of the federal judiciary with the appointment of dozens of judges with an ideological bent toward the administration’s agenda.

Republicans are working with Trump to make a record-breaking number of appointments to federal courts. These new, mostly young, white men will be in a position to rule on legislation that could change America for years. But the most contentious appointment would be a second nomination to the highest court in the land. The supreme court has over decades delivered landmark decisions on issues from abortion to affirmative action and same-sex marriage. The potential for Trump to install another justice on the nine-seat bench, some legal experts argue, could have profound consequences on issues ranging from women’s reproductive health to LGBT rights. With speculation mounting over the possible retirement of supreme court justice Anthony Kennedy, Trump could have a lasting impact on reshaping America’s most important court.

Maybe two more, or three with another term.

I would say two more in this term, because Kennedy is rumored to be close to retirement while Ginsburg doesn't look like she's long for this world, but then I recall that Kennedy has been "rumored" to be considering retirement for years now while Ginsburg has spent the past 20+ years seemingly at death's doorstep and coming out no worse for the wear.

Too much hyperventilating. The next leftist prez will simply expand the court with his liberal picks. The next leftist congress will encourage it and support it. This accomplishent by Trump only helps the cause so long as the leftist can be stopped.

They will return soon enough and they will be ruthless in obtaining and retaining power. They will go full Lenin.

Any future nominations need to explore if the nominee is a gun owner. Need to be clear that we need people that respect all of the bill of rights and not looking to rewrite it.

Roosevelt threatened to increase the supreme court for 9 to 15 and pack it with fellow socialist (communist). Obama had that opportunity during his first term.

Messing with the supreme court in that manner would create chaos in this country.

I agree. If McConnell and Ryan were worth a damn, we would have corrected so many problems by now. It’s a credit to Trump he’s gotten much of anything done > IMO.

We could have a lot more judges placed. Trump could have signed much more legislation, on major issues.

We could have defunded Planned Parenthood.

Trump’s legacy will be hampered by those on our side he had to drag kicking and screaming along with him.

Sounds like quite a caring nursing staff./s

Just stating facts

many of the older crowd (I’m one of them) are sold on the idea of major orthopedic surgery when their body just can’t take the drain on their reserves. they may recover from the surgery but will succumb to the slightest illness to come along. Pneumonia, flu, etc.

I’m a tad older than RBG -—

But you have a sharp mind and an agile spirit. Ruth, being a lifelong liberal, is decayed inside.

In the final analysis, I'll bet your posts on FR are a more valuable contribution to humanity, than anything Ruth has done in her gov't career.

Libs are furiously pumping more formaldehyde and sawdust into RBG hoping to keep that crone appearing to be alive.

Yeah, it’s a good sign the Guardian is panicking. I noticed, in their description of the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, they only mentioned the “poor” faggots, not their attack on the first amendment. They must know the first amendment is very important to most Americans (except faggots and their ilk).

Replacing Kennedy with a reliable Strict Constructionist would be nice but Kennedy’s been mostly good. The real coup would be to replace RBG and Breyer. Breyer is the young one of those two at 80.....

Amazingly enough, the Wise Latina may first of the Leftist block to leave the court.

Someone has a device that reads one’s blood sugar continuously. Don’t know if there’s something that automatically gives you insulin (besides a pump, I think), but sounds like Diabetes 1 will soon not be a problem.

I absolutely hate it that they always refer to abortion as "women's reproductive health". It is no such thing! Were it really about women's health then it would have to include the emotional, physical and spiritual well being of not only the woman in an "unplanned" pregnancy but the father of the child and the rest of the family on both sides. Women are being exploited by the liberal propaganda and have been since before Roe v. Wade. Abortion not only sacrifices the life of the unborn it diminishes the intrinsic part of womanhood to protect and nurture her offspring on the altar of satisfying the sexual desires of men. That women are defending it is terrible!

Ginsberg can’t last much longer. Sotomayor has had type 1 diabetes from youth and is 60-something. That’s two.

If only RBG would follow Antonin Scalia’s example, it could be 3...

Scalia was probably assassinated.
