Retiring GOP lawmaker: NRA refuses to compromise on ‘reasonable’ gun laws
The Hill ^ | 05/31/18 | Morgan Gstalter

Retiring Rep. Tom Rooney (R-Fla.) criticized the National Rifle Association (NRA) for refusing to accept “reasonable” gun control regulations in an interview published Wednesday.

Rooney, a gun owner and Second Amendment advocate, told Sarasota Magazine that he thought raising the minimum age for assault rifle purchases was a “reasonable” measure.

“The problem is with the political arm of the NRA,” Rooney said. “I don’t know in the last 10 years whether there has been any compromise with guns by the NRA.”

The NRA said in a February statement to the Washington Post that raising the age for purchasing assault rifles to 21 was unconstitutional for those between the ages of 18 and 20.

“Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” the statement said.

Rooney told Sarasota Magazine that part of the problem was disagreement among the Republican Party, despite controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress.

You are absolutely right.

They love the terms “reasonable” and “common sense”. Of course they are lying. They really mean draconian and radical but those words don’t sound as good.

Which “reasonable” gun law has prevented a shooting thus far, Rep Rooney? Can’t name one? Hm. Neither can I. So, exactly why do we need more of them? To save your stinkin’ career, or those of your ilk? Yeah, I’m not so heavily invested in those as you are. Enjoy retirement, sir.

We “compromised” dozens of times with the petty tyrants who want us disarmed. Each compromise made us less safe from crazies like the school shooters, less safe from criminals, and less safe from any hypothetical government that might someday get out of control. However, unlike this traitor’s description of the NRA, I am open to reasonable and to compromise.

The reasonable response would be to repeal half of all existing federal, state, and local gun laws that restrict our individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms - as a compromise, I’d even let the thugs on the left choose which half. I’ve even learned from the elitists. Once they agree to that compromise, I’ll be back next year offering the same compromise - repealing half of the remaining gun laws that restrict our God-given rights. And the next year. And the year after that. We could compromise our way to the correct legislative answer on gun control - the Second Amendment and nothing else.

““Reasonable gun laws,” the oxymoron of our time.”

I'm for common sense gun laws.

Federal tax credit for the purchase of gun safety gun safes.

Federal tax credit for purchase of gun safety gun training classes.

Federal tax credit for purchase of gun safety training ammunition.

Federal tax credit for purchase of gun safety training firearms including AR-15s.

Any gun law is likely an abridgement of the Second Amendment.

Yes

The “Rockefeller” study of mass shootings for the past 50 years completely debunks ANY argument like this whining representatives that banning Assault Rifles for people under 18 would do ANY good!

I recommend all Freepers Google this “Rockefeller Study/Assault Rifles” in order to have your argument gun fully loaded re any liberal you might unfortunately bump into.

Rooney was awful. I used to participate in his town hall calls. Until I asked a question about Obama’s birth certificate and got cut from the call. Rooney could have easily answered he didn’t believe Obama was a usurper but instead, hung up on one of his constituents. That told me all I needed to know.

Is the NRA in Congress, Tom? Does it vote on legislation? Does the Constitution say that any gun control legislation has to be approved by the NRA?

What this dope really means is that he’d like to support gun control but he knows he’d be voted out of office by the voters if he did, so he uses the NRA as some all-controlling bogeyman that somehow can stop legislation. Its the votes, Tom, not the NRA, who don’t want your stupid “reasonable” gun laws.

You could employ a bunch of people to fine tooth comb the 20,000 plus gun laws in existence, state and federal and probably find a few that make absolutely no sense, much less common sense. How many of these new laws being called for already exist ? You have to wonder if even the NRA has a good handle on the actual laws on the books nationwide.

“He only wants to infringe a little bit.”

Just like being a “little bit pregnant”, it’s binary, not a continuum. I can just imagine what he promised the girls on a Saturday night in the back seat back in the day...

Yeah 20,000 gun laws later we need “reasonable” gun control laws.

Glad you’re retiring. Coward.

There are no “reasonable gun laws.” But, since the country seems well on the way to tyranny with the fourth and fifth amendments being restricted and the first amendment under attack (hate speech anyone?) I wouldn’t be surprised if some additional unreasonable gun laws are pushed through in some of the blue states.

Implementing laws that punish law abiding gun owners for the misdeeds of criminals is never reasonable.
