1969 was the year Wilt injured his knee in the 4th quarter of the last game and when he recovered, Butch van Breda Kolff would not put him back for the last minutes. The 4th quarter is on youtube and it's an interesting look at the final minutes of Bill Russell and Sam Jones’s careers in a high pressure situation.

Classic!

1969 was the upset year — Jets Super Bowl, Mets World Series, Celtics NBA.

I include the Celtics, because despite having such a 1960s dynasty, they were counted out by most people in 1969 after a lackluster regular season and old age.

But not by Wilt. During one of the last regular season games, the postgame interviewer asked Wilt who he thought was the team to beat in the play-offs. The up-and-coming Bullets?

“No. The Celtics. When you’ve been beaten by them as much as I have, you got to respect them.”
