Exactly. I drove a 20 year old car, was chosen for my kid to receive free meals because last name looks somewhat Hispanic, were not eligible though so turned it down. Every morning I saw parents coming out of the free breakfast cafeteria, heading to MUCH NICER CARS THAN MINE, with handfuls of pastries and yogurts they took from their kids breakfast tray to enjoy on their own. (They allowed parents to sit with their kids at breakfast in there.)

You have pride and can hold your head high——my mother was widowed in 1938,with a 5 year old and a 2 year old-——never took a dime from anyone,except occasional help from her sisters who always bought our back-to-school clothes and our Easter outfits.
She lived until she was 91.
