The Stasi existed for almost exactly 40 years. It collected between 900 million and 1 billion pages of documents.

The NSA/FBI/CIA hoover up that amount of data every two days, without a warrant. They now clearly use it to affect domestic politics and to intimidate those who dissent.
The STASI never dreamed of having the detailed information that our intelligence agencies collect.

Draw your own conclusions...but there is a word for a society like this and it ain’t “Constitutional Republic”.
