EU will 'dig its own grave' if it tries to punish Italy over new anti-Europe coalition, warns US billionaire George Soros as he calls for compensation for the country's influx of migrants

US financier said Italy's situation 'unfair and also financially very burdensome'

Sicily is one of the main landing points for refugees crossing the Med to Europe

Soros said rise of Italy's right wing League party partly due to Europe's 'flawed' migration policies

Billionaire philanthropist George Soros has urged the EU to compensate Italy for its influx of migrants.

The Hungarian-born US financier said the recent rise of Italy's right wing League party - now in a coalition government with the populist Five Star movement - was partly due to Europe's 'flawed' migration policies that 'imposed an unfair burden' on the country.

He also warned the EU it will 'dig its own grave' if it tries to 'teach Italy a lesson' amid the political turmoil in the country and fails to appease Italy's new Eurosceptic government.

Italy has become the focal point for Mediterranean migration in recent years with more than 700,000 migrants arriving in the country since 2013.

Soros said refugees were now no longer able to move on to northern Europe and the situation Italy found itself in was 'unfair and also financially very burdensome'.

The 87-year-old hedge fund owner, writing in Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper, said: 'Until recently, most refugees could move on to northern Europe, where they wanted to go.

'But since September 2015, both France and Austria closed their borders and the rescued migrants were stuck in Italy.

'This situation was not only unfair but also financially very burdensome at a time when Italy was economically lagging behind most other European countries.

'That was the main reason why Lega Nord, in particular, did so

All Soros is trying to do is find someway to keep the Illegal flow going.
All his plans have failed and his last resort is to get the EU to payoff Italy to take more Illegals.

The LAST thing he wants is for Poland, CZ, Hungary and Austria feelings to continue to spread.
He must stop it now or it will spread.

And it all began here in the USA.
:-)

Serious question: Why is Soros or his offspring still breathing?

Naturally - it isn't his money and it's a way to avoid Italy sending them back. I think Georgie is missing the point. The Italians want to stay Italian, and even more important, the Jihadistanis want to stay Muslim, and that's what he wants Brussels to pay for. I speak enough Italian to understand the word "NO!"

“What is his angle?”

His legacy is in the crapper and he’ll try anything to salvage it.

He’s got to be up to something like that. Also, his power base is currently in Ukraine, so he may want to shift the EU’s center of power to something more favorable to his interests.

Eventually the current Italian government will fall (they always do).

Back in the day (when the dollar exchanged for a whole lot of lire), the over/under for an Italian "government" was on the order of a few hours.

There's a guy trying desperately to stay alive and/or relevant. Thanks BBell.
