McConnell cancels Senate's August recess
The Hill ^ | June 5, 2018 | Jordain Carney

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Tuesday that he will cancel the August recess, citing "historic obstruction" by Democrats.

“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled," McConnell said in a statement.

He added that senators would stay in session "to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees.”

The Senate had been expected to leave town on August 3 for a four-week break and not return to Washington until early September, after Labor Day.

But under McConnell's new plan, senators are expected to be out of town for the week of August 6. They will then return to Washington and remain in session for the rest of the month.

Here is McConnell's full statement.

“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled. Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees.”

Part of this is probably to keep Trump from any recess appointments in fact it may be the main reason. Protecting jeff and Rosenweasel is a GOPe priority.

That’s how I see it.

This odious and vile creature really needs full exposure. FULL exposure, including his wife and her family “connections”.

That was already taken care of last Thursday, when the Senate agreed to pro forma sessions during recess.

Partner, I love your statement. President Trump is getting $1 a year salary and working from 6;30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every single day of the year.

Americans are getting tired of Congress not really working on a daily basis period.

I couldn’t agree more.

I pray he’ll keep this up and get President Trump’s agenda accomplished.

Talks big sometimes -- probably the problem is, he's been too slow in ****ing up everything and too slow on impeachment. Thanks jazusamo.

Constitutionalally speaking, Pence as President of the Senate could theoretically put the Senate in recess so Trump could make a recess appointment. Don’t know if this has ever been done but it seems the Constitution would allow for it.

Good for McConnell ...

Without McConnell that baker would be forced to bake cakes that offended his religion...

The Senate Democrats, Wyden in particular are still holding on to the Russia narrative as a means to stall the nomination process. In the case of Wyden, its a Treasury Dept nominee. There is no one out there with two functioning neurons that still believes Trump engaged the Russians to get him elected. Yet the Left persists (The Left is synonymous with Democrat)

Since Trump has been in office, McConnell has not allowed a true recess.....

He has always kept a couple of senators in town and in technical session.....

McConnell stated when President Trump took office that the Senate would never have a full recess so as to block the potential of President Trump making any recess appointments.....

Let that one sink in.....

Notice there hasn’t been a single recess appointment? Even though there is a huge backlog of assistant director positions.....

Cabinet officials are running on their own without assistants other than the Obama appointed ones still in position....

Good! I hope McConnell will push the nominations and the legislation through efficiently and make sure they are good. We need appropriations bills, but we need to do them right (i.e., thrifty).
