Another interesting factoid on the 1973 Belmont Stakes.... 5,617 winning parimutuel bet tickets on Secretariat were never redeemed... presumably preferring to keep them as souvenirs since the $2 ticket was only worth $2.20

It just never gets old. I think they finally figured that Secretariat won by 31 lengths.

But it wasn't only the margin of victory that was so staggering. Then again, there just 3 rivals in that race, including a pretty good horse named Sham. It was the amazing time. I think he broke the track record by more than a second. I have his full past performances. I'll post them later.

i dont know what Belmont you watched..Sham had the lead for about 10 seconds half way thru the first turn...when Anderson called the 6 furlong time, Sham was behind by a good 6-7 lengths...this is probably the greatest single performance by a horse ever run..nobody was gonna beat Secretariat that day... to say it was because of a horse named Sham is just odd.

Secretariat, did they test for doping back then?

That is the problem with ALL modern competitions nowadays, is hidden doping. Results today may be dubious. Maybe not back then.

Lance Armstrong. Need we say more. Like a magician, whoever can find a trick nobody can see, can dominate.

Just noticed on Secretariat’s past performances that Sham actually beat him by 4 lengths in Aqueduct’s Wood Memorial. Sham ran 2nd, Secretariat third.

I lived about 10 blocks from Aqueduct from 1970 to 2004. Worked at Belmont as a teen from ‘74-’76. Got to meet Secretariat’s groom. My best friend at the time worked for Lucien Lauren’s son, Roger. Roger trained Great Contractor.

Although I never saw Sec when I was there from 74-76 (Sec won the ‘73 Triple Crown), I did get to see and pet horses such as the great filly Ruffian, Forego, Little Current and Cannonade. Ruffian used to pass our barn in the morning on her way to the training track.

Most impressive thing about it was the winning time.

Baffert’s a really cool guy. Great sense of humor. And actually very humble.

Yes, they did.

Dancer’s Image won the 1968 Derby but was disqualified for using an anti-inflammatory which is legal today and commonly used (butazone).

Re: Ruffian

She would lead every step of the way and steadily increase the margin until the finish. Broke or tied a record in just about every race she ever ran, if not every one.

Secretariat, did they test for doping back then?

Yes, they did. Horses would have to provide a urine sample after each race.

On Kentucky Derby Day in '74 I was working for trainer JP Conway who was running a horse in Aqueduct's Carter Hdcp. The horse's name was Nile Delta. Also in the race was superhorse Forego. Anyway, I was assigned to walk the horse before and after the race. Not in the paddock, just 'receiving barn' (I usually only worked in the morning). Afterwards, we and the others had to take our horses to be tested.

Justify was sucking air at the end of the Preakness.

If there are distance specialists in the Belmont I’d go with one of those.

I was reading about Secretariat last night. Physically, he was a nearly perfect racehorse. Huge and well formed. And a great disposition.
