Once elected, Trump deserved more of a chance than opponents gave him
The Herald and News ^ | June 6, 2017 | Jay Ambrose

Posted on 06/06/2018 12:33:55 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

I am not a Republican, I did not vote for Donald Trump. I castigated him during the primaries, focused more on the outlandish alternative during the general election, but still hold him in low regard. The tweets, the mostly ignorant, buffoonish tweets, sum up the worst of him in my opinion, but what I wrote after the election was that we should give him a chance.

The opposite has occurred.

Not only have critics overstated almost every flub he has made, governmental officials in the executive and judicial branches have shoved aside rule of law through felonious leaks, phony decisions and much more in trying to get him no matter what. Through such means, the left has illustrated repeatedly why it is twice the danger to our republic that he is.

It has in fact been a danger for some time.

Obama was worse

Consider the limp argument about Trump’s supposed autocracy and then compare him to President Barack Obama. To the extent Trump is a tyrant, it’s mostly in what he says, not what he does, as in references to “fake news” supposedly ruinous to our press.

Obama was a man of action. His administration actually spied on reporters. It threatened them with jail if they did not reveal sources. It set a record in refusing to release government information requested by citizens. And his verbal jabs at Fox News were just as vicious as Trump’s jabs at the New York Times and CNN. By the way, CNN did have three reporters resign after an inaccurate story about a Trump adviser having a secret meeting with an official of a Russian investment fund.

Other examples of Obama autocracy?

His administration set records for major, costly regulations that stymie business and reduce your freedoms even if some do some good. His Clean Power Plan would have dictated to states that they had to get rid of certain laws.

Due process died

His education department told colleges and universities they must abandon due process for any male accused of sexual harassment. He granted legal status to illegal immigrants after saying some 20 times it would be unconstitutional to do so. He unilaterally rewrote laws. He refused to enforce others.

He also skipped the constitutional requirement of having the Senate vote on treaties, thereby making them mere executive orders that Trump could reverse, and fortunately has in the case of Iran.

As sure as anything, an enriched Iran is still pursuing nuclear armament and Middle East hegemony. The Obama philosophy was to ask for little, to get less and then to declare the United States a winner.

Trump is said to have done nothing good, but, even with its faults, the GOP tax reform was maybe the single biggest gift to working- and middle-class Americans in decades, and that includes minorities. After the worst recovery since World War II, much had been trending in the right direction, but here was a mighty push we would not have had under Hillary Clinton.

At the same time, I do believe Trump’s international trade games could be economically ruinous and his casualness about the debt is enough to make one shiver.

Wall is overkill

I believe in border security but think the idea of a wall is overkill.

Trump can still be less a threat than the Democrats and I defend him when I think he is, thereby earning downright trashy, hateful emails along with a few thoughtful ones. Even many of the supposed intellectuals out there seem to think any defense of Trump at all puts you in a basket of deplorables.

All of this along with what we see from activists pretty well sums up how many Trump opponents are dogmatically sure of themselves, as shorn of norms as he is and disrespectful of their national inheritance. Following good luck in midterm elections and his impeachment, the hope is to enforce more semi-socialist, liberty-imperiling central planning.

They make me want to defend Trump all the more.

“I believe in border security but think the idea of a wall is overkill. “

Nope.

Build the wall. Trump is right, and that is why he won.

All of these people, don’t understand why Trump is the president right now.

And they, or someone who thinks like them, aren’t.

Because they are WRONG on the important issues.

Like the wall.

If Trump were a passive beurocrat like our last Republican president, the deep state would not be worried.

But Trump is an in your face make things happen guy.

I did not vote for Obama...twice(?) but I accepted the results as a mandate from the majority of the American people. This is Democracy, like it or not.
I disliked him and his Presidency, but I never cried, rampaged, looted, destroyed public property or said “Not my President”. In other words I accepted the loss and moved on.

This is not true with America’s liberal Left and Democrats. It shows tremendous immaturity and respect for the institutions of government and a high degree of childish ignorance and hubris.

It does not help the nation but it helps the thousands of Psychiatrists out there...

On the wall....it is one single component. On value...it’s marginal unless you utilized more personnel along the wall.

One of the things that I suspect may fall into play is that the US will conclude some peace deal with NK, and a piece of this will be the release of US solders (maybe 5,000, maybe 10,000) from South Korea. The obvious thing to do....bring those back and base them along the AZ, New Mexico and Texas.

If you would toss in higher number of security personnel, the wall, a national ID card, and more enforcement of laws that exist on illegals being hired, then this whole discussion would go away in just a year.

I disagree.

I think the wall is CRITICAL.

It needs to be built. Otherwise, after one losing election, it will be 100% reversed.

I will give the guy credit for not being a knee-jerk Trump hater.

He is wrong about the wall but he is closer to the truth than most demonrats

Why post this drivel?

It is not drivel. It is the statement that an opponent of Trump, someone who dislikes him and dislikes several of his policies, recognizes that the left is the greater threat to our institutions and individual liberty.

We need more "Never Trumpers" to recognize this.

Looking past his objections to the wall, this is what conservatives have been saying about Obama's Presidency and the left's modus operandi for years.

Having a realization like this are how future Republicans are born from former Democrats.

Jay is right with some of his comments, but wrong with others. Especially with his claim the wall is overkill.

I agree with him in that sometimes I think President Trump shoots from the lip and I wish he’d comment a little less.

His policies however have been fantastic.

As for the budget and the deficit....it was the Republican Congress that passed that. President Trump did not like it but was forced to sign it. He warned that he would not sign another bloated monstrosity of a budget like that.

Other than that one Hawaiian judge he appointed to the 9th circuit, his judicial appointments have been very good.

As to the economy...it wasn’t really in a good place before. We had a very slow very anemic recovery that only STARTED to feel like any recovery at all about 2 years ago. Its been absolutely turbocharged under President Trump thanks to the tax cuts he pushed for and thanks in large part to all the deregulating he’s done - special kudos for taking a chainsaw to a lot of the really destructive enviro-wacko regulations that were crippling business.

There are a lot of Free Traitors™ posting regularly on Free Republic that would agree with this leftists looney tune stance on trade.

I remember the fit Rats had when Rush said he wish Obama failure in his agenda. Now they don’t just wish it for Trump they actually do everything they physically can to make him fail. After the hate I have witnessed from these sub-human Rats I can not find any love or compasion for them and I hope every possible ill fate upon them.

Your thread is a good place for this email I received this a.m.

Subject: GOOD DEEDS IGNORED

Thought you’d like to be informed, since the media won’t let you know...

The White House....
short report..... it’s called ‘Trump Derangement
Syndrome’ - as titled by Rush Limbaugh.

Nothing Trump does - to the
good - will ever make it on the national news. The
media have their agenda and they’re going to stick
with it, no matter what.

On Friday, the Trump administration released
their annual report to Congress on White House Office
Personnel. It includes the name, status, salary and
position title of all 377 White House employees.

The report also said that Trump decided not
to take a dime of his salary. Instead he donated it to
an amazing cause! (see below).

The report also showed that President Trump
is far better at saving money than Obama was.
The total annual White House salaries under Trump are
$35.8 million vs. $40.9 under Obama, a savings of $5.1
million. Here are some other key findings. There are
110 fewer employees on White House staff under Trump
than under Obama at this point in their respective
presidencies.

Nineteen fewer staffers are dedicated to The
First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS). Currently,
there are five staffers dedicated to Melania Trump vs.
24 staffers who served Michelle Obama (FY2009)

However, it’s what the report said Trump did
with this salary that has everyone talking. Instead of
taking his salary, Trump donated all $400,000 to the
Department of the Interior where it will be used for
construction and repair needs at military cemeteries!
AMAZING! It’s so great to have a President who loves
our brave military men and women so much!

Oh, and where’s the media coverage of this?
Oh that’s right, they don’t cover anything good that the
President does.

NO, BUT WE WILL!
PLEASE, PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL YOUR EMAIL
PALS AND OTHERS! TOGETHER, WE’LL GET THE MESSAGE OUT.

This was thoughtful. It was “this is what I don’t like about Trump and this is what I don’t like about the left (which I find even more threatening). We need to appeal to and convince people like this as the left gets more and more unhinged. The only argument the left can offer is, if you aren’t a member of my tribe, you are a “fascist.” We can calmly offer facts to those willing to listen.
