Josh Newman's recall shows that Republicans only want to win, no matter the cost to Californians
The Los Angeles Times ^ | 06-06-2018 | Kerry Cavanaugh

After two years in office, Sen. Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) was recalled Tuesday for his vote to increase the gas tax to repair the state’s woefully maintained streets and expand its inadequate transit systems.

Political opportunism won over responsible governance.

Republicans launched the recall campaign after Newman supported the gas tax increase in Senate Bill 1, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass. But Newman’s vote was pretext. Really, Republicans were trying to win back a seat that Newman narrowly won in 2016 and that was historically held by the GOP.

The campaign worked. Newman is out and Republican former assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang, who lost the election in 2016, is in. The GOP got the do-over it wanted in a lower turnout primary election.

The real concern is how this kind of craven political gamesmanship will play in November.

In the quest to win races, however, the GOP wants to trounce what was once a thoroughly Republican idea: that drivers should help pay for road repairs and transportation infrastructure with gas taxes.

that drivers should help pay for road repairs and transportation infrastructure with gas taxes.

Fake news. Sacramento has continuously siphoned gas tax money for non-transportation related expenses.

Oh boo hoo hoo, LA Slimes. As if Democrats only seek office for nothing but pure intentions with no politics? Who are you trying to kid? The gas tax was an abomination that mostly hurts lower middle class and the poor. I thought libs stuck up for these people?

The LA Times has a big hand in trying to turn California into a Venezuela.

Is there anyone left who doesn’t understand that the “mainstream media” is simply a conduit for DNC press releases?

People hate high taxes.

I thought a representative is supposed to represent his constituents? Apparently not if you’re a Democrat.

Josh Newman was kicked out because he voted against his constituents’ interests in a GOP majority district.

All politics are local. The LAT is whining because a Democrat lost.

Good.

The original idea was that drivers should pay for roads and road repairs.

Adding transit, bike paths, and a whole host of other pet projects into what the gas tax should pay for is an entirely Democrat idea.

Elections can be ejections for left wingers who hate taxpaying voters.

The liberal thugs in Sacramento have been stealing our road tax $’s for decades to pay for their illegal voters.

A gas tax is the most regressive tax there is.

Don’t give us the BS about repairing infrastructure when Democrats have budgeted billions for the bullet train.

It isn’t a lack of money but simply one of priorities.

Stop wasting taxpayer money on illegal aliens. Then you’ll have plenty of money for road maintenance and repair.

Remember the ObamaCare vote? The last needed vote was cast by a dem that suddenly decided to retire or not run for office again.

Guy from MI, iirc.

California is among the highest in the country for gasoline taxes, and I believe there are some king-sized city gas taxes on top of those. In any event, California has enough population density (unlike a big state like Wyoming or Montana) and milder weather than some of the expensive northern states (e.g. Pennsylvania) that it should have to justify any gasoline increase. Does any of that money go to choo-choo trains?

Lots of liberal tears are flowing at the LA Slimes, Sacramento Bee, SF Chronical and San Jose Mercury as the GOP was not shut out in CA last night. In fact they showed potentiL strength.
