Unpopular gas tax could be issue in California governor's race

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

San Diego businessman Jon Cox may be the underdog in the governor’s race, but Republicans believe Democratic opponent and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is vulnerable because of his support for an unpopular tax.

If there’s one issue that resonates with Republicans, it’s the repeal of the gas tax in California. On Wednesday, Cox made a point of blaming Newsom for the 12-cent hike at the pumps -- even though Newsom, as lieutenant governor, was not involved in the legislative vote.

“He wants to defend the gas tax,” Cox said. “I'm leading the effort to repeal the gas tax.”

Newsom does support the gas tax, as he declared during a May gubernatorial candidate debate in San Jose. Newsom said the tax would raise $52 billion for road repairs and infrastructure improvements.

“We need to continue to invest,” Newsom said last month. “I applaud the courage of the legislative leaders, and I think we should do the right thing and extend that gas tax.”

The Democratic candidate could eat live babies on stage and the republicans still wouldn’t win in California. I’d be shocked if the election turned for them on something as trivial as the Democrats blowing billions, killing people, and otherwise trashing the state over the past decade.

“He may be short on charisma”

That’s probably a more positive, uplifting characterization:)

“Newsom and his Progressive cabal”

Of note: Jerry Brown is a conservative compared to this new generation of progressives. And that is not an exaggeration.

BTW, I was born in this state. I am not leaving.

I will stay and fight. As will my extended family. Conservatives all.

Liberals love taxes but they like to hide them in “taxing the wealthiest”. But there is no money in taxing the wealthy. Gas and sales taxes are the best way to get revenue because they are a tax on the everyone including the poor. There are lots of poor people paying into the system with that method.

California needs revenue like an addict needs Oxy and that addict has a drug store he can rob whenever he wants.

It’s 1 in Tennessee’s as the RINO gov shoved through a PROGRESSIVE GAS TAX HIKE with the help of his RINOS including his head pusher Beth Harwell who wants his job.

Then we have LA Raza Randy Boyd the Illegal Alien hugger, gun grabber. Both he and a unknown WM. Lee, Harewll tout they can balance the state budget because they balance their businesses and home. DUH! TENNESSEE STATE CONSTITUTION MANDATES A BALANCED BUDGET!

Sheeple will believe anything.

John Cox should talk about that Hi Speed Rail that will cost Americans tax money... I’m a railfan, but Americans like their trucks more than trains...
