The first furnace at this reopened Steel Plant shipped the first steel in two years on Tuesday, and US Steel announces that they are hiring, and will fire up the second one. WINNING....

In 1977 I was going cross country from Colorado to Wash DC along I-70. I was a young GI, had a used 70 Ford Maverick, and got 4 new retreads (remember those, before radials?) put on and started my trip.
By the time I got to Kansas City, Missouri I knew something was wrong! Just West of St Louis, the reapplied treads came off. Not wanting to stop in Soul Louis, I crossed the Mississippi and wound up in Granite City. I limped to a tire dealer. I had practically no real money, no credit card or even check book. At the time I got paid 2 a month by cash and that was it.
Well, to make long story sort, this guy who owned the place had a son who died in Vietnam, and he gave me and mounted four new radials and told me to mail him the money when ever I had enough.
Some grat folks in Granite City!
