THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

MUSIC IN THE AIR

This musical brought Oscar Hammerstein back into the mix, but the show was a step backward to the kind of operetta that Kern saw on Broadway in his youth. It’s set in Bavaria in the present day Thirties, and it’s a far cry from what Oscar would do with Richard Rodgers in 1959 with “The Sound of Music.”

”I’VE TOLD EVERY LITTLE STAR”

In 1931, Jerome woke up one morning with a bird singing outside his window. It so enchanted him that he woke his wife, and they listened together. When the bird flew away, Jerome sang the melody over and over to himself then fell asleep. When he woke up, he set about writing down the tune, but to his dismay he could not recall it correctly. He went to his piano but soon gave up in frustration. The song that had seemed so memorable and simple just a few hours before had eluded him completely.

By a stroke of luck the bird reappeared the following morning. Jerome grabbed a pencil and paper, and stealing quietly downstairs to his piano he wrote down the tune. The bird was later identified as a Cape Cod Sparrow.

Oscar: “Jerry got the melodic theme from a bird. He swears it! He heard a finch outside the window singing the first line, and he built a refrain on it.” The song was difficult for the setting of lyrics. Oscar: “There were times when I wished the finch had kept his big mouth shut!”

Few tunes are more beautiful than this, and it has stood the test of time, being adapted to most music formats. This is what it sounded like in the original show.

Mary Ellis: “I’ve Told Every Little Star”

MUSIC IN THE AIR: ”I’VE TOLD EVERY LITTLE STAR”

Merv Griffin? Long before he became a television talk/variety show host and billionaire, he started as a Big Band singer. This is from 1950 as the Big Band era was drawing to a close. It’s not a great version, but it has historical value.

We used to have Nike sites next to Crossbay Blvd in Queens and the Belt Parkway in B’klyn, NYC. No buildings though, those guys lived in tents. I’m sure there were others around the city also, but those are two that I remember. We also had gun emplacements at Ft Tilden and a machine gun tower ae the entrance to Jamaica Bay. That tower survived well into the 90s IIRC. I left Fun City in 02
